ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Due for a big game, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team delivered in a big way Saturday afternoon for its first-ever Landmark Conference victory. The Blue Jays put in six goals, their second-highest scoring output of the season, in a 6-2 win over Goucher.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski recorded a hat trick, while
Maria Boretti scored her first career goal.
Elizabethtown (6-3, 1-1 Landmark), going through a tough stretch that included three straight defeats, was looking to rebound on the friendly confines of Ira R. Herr Field. Having only scored one goal in those three games, getting on the board early would go a long way, and the Jays did just that.
Trisha Clark's shot in the third minute was saved by Lexi Rudolph, but next shot off the foot of Cerankowski had a different end result. The junior midfielder collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, took two dribbles to her right and unleashed a drive into the upper left corner of the net in the fourth minute to start the scoring.
Clark took a rebound off a deflection from
Kara Weller's throw-in and buried the shot to give E-town two goals on two consecutive shots. Clark's goal made it 2-0 in the eighth minute.
However, when it seemed like the Blue Jays were about to seize total control of the match, Goucher (3-7-1, 0-2 Landmark) responded with a goal of its own. Lindsey Puopolo played a through ball up the center of the field that allowed speedy Brianna Hite to run on get into the Jays' box where she cut the Gophers' deficit in half in the 13th minute.
Goucher and E-town traded shots for a six-minute stretch of the first half, but Cerankowski was the only one to make it count.
Lauren Berry crossed the ball in from the right side of goal and Cerankowski was able to beat her defender to the near post to get a touch and one-time the ball into the back of the net. The Jays led 3-1 at the half.
A little over two minutes into the second half, Cerankowski completed her hat trick.
Maddie Burkhardt trapped an errant Goucher clearance from the box and sent a long ball toward the back post, right onto the foot of Cerankowski, who crashed the goal and tapped it in.
The three-goal lead did not last long, though, as Stephanie Budrock has the Gophers back in it at 4-2 just 12 seconds after E-town's goal. The game nearly became 4-3 nine minutes later when Budrock hit the post.
Dana Robidoux then made a sprawling save on the rebound to keep the two-goal advantage for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown was able to put the contest out of reach in the 63rd minute. Clark took the ensuing corner kick and served it to the back post, right onto the head of Boretti, who went unchallenged in the air to score her first collegiate goal.
Callie McClanahan added her third of the season in the 78th minute off assists from Lindsey Hoagland and Clark.
The women's soccer team is back at home on Wednesday, October 8 for a non-conference meeting with Washington (Md.) College. Game time is 7 p.m.
