Field hockey shuts out Goucher for first conference win

TOWSON, Md. — In search of its first-ever Landmark Conference win, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team busted open a scoreless game in the second half to handle Goucher 5-0 Saturday afternoon. Four different Blue Jays scored goals, including two for Andrea Keady.

Elizabethtown (6-5, 1-1 Landmark) kept Gophers' goalie Demie Huffman very busy in the first half as the Blue Jays outshot Goucher (7-3, 1-1 Landmark) 16-2. Unfortunately for E-town, none of those 16 shots ended up as a goal.

Alyssa Aichele was close to giving the Jays the lead with 6:52 gone, but her shot rang off the post. Less than a minute later, Aichele was again denied by Huffman, who had seven saves in the first 35 minutes. Emma Christman also hit the post in the first half.

Selene Jones only needed to make one save in the entire game, and that came with under a minute left to go before the half. Jones stopped Lizzie Barminski's shot attempt at 34:24. The Gophers had a penalty corner seconds before the break, but Barminski's chance was blocked and as the scoreless tie remained.

While the frustrations may have mounted for E-town in the first half having not scored, those were all alleviated in the second half as they would score on five of their seven shots.

Keady notched her third of the season four minutes into the final half. Jacki Hikes then found Keady three minutes later for her second of the game, making it 2-0, which was more than enough for the Jays at that point.

Emily Mason took Elizabethtown's penalty corner in the 58th minute. The ball made its way back to where it had started with Mason, who scored her second of the year off an assist from Hannah Heritage.

Hikes then got her fifth of the season in the 62nd minute and Nicole Leaf converted a penalty corner opportunity for the Jays in the 66th minute. Taylor Alwine fed Leaf for her goal, her first of the season.

Jones recorded her second shutout of the season and did not need to make a save in the second half, despite the Gophers holding a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners in the final 35 minutes.

The field hockey team returns home to Wolf Field on Friday, October 10 to face Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference contest starting at 4:30 p.m.
