ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — 24 hours after a tough conference loss on the road, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team rebounded in a big way. The Blue Jays put in five goals and controlled much of its 5-1 victory over Moravian Sunday afternoon at Wolf Field. E-town pulled back into a two-way tie for second place with Juniata at 4-2, whom the Jays defeated 1-0 last weekend.
Elizabethtown (10-6, 4-2 Landmark) was on the attack early.
Emily Mason took the Jays' penalty corner just under three minutes into the game. The ball came back to Mason, who had her shot attempt saved by Moravian (7-9, 1-5 Landmark) goalie Megan Kanyuk. The rebound found
Alyssa Aichele, who sent the ball toward the left post and
Jacki Hikes hit it home for her seventh goal of the season.
Selene Jones made three consecutive saves on shots from the Greyhounds over the following six minutes, but Moravian could not get it past the senior goalie.
The Jays continued controlling the game throughout the first half, but couldn't add on to the lead. That was until
Emma Christman registered her sixth of the season at the 31:48 mark.
Nicole Leaf dribbled the ball into the circle and sent a cross toward goal. With Kanyuk rushing out to play the ball,
Andrea Keady tapped the ball onto Christman's stick at the right post to set up the freshman's first of two in the game.
Rebecca Hamel cut the deficit in half with under a minute to go in the first half. Christina Duddy brought the ball into the circle from the left side and pushed the ball toward the cage. It made it through several bodies before being deflected into the goal.
Mason, who hadn't scored a goal the past two seasons, continued her career season in scoring with her fourth of the year in the second half. She batted home the ball on Werner's attempt at goal.
Elizabethtown got its fourth goal of the game at 47:20 when Aichele scored after her first attempt was saved. Kanyuk stopped Aichele right in front of goal, but Hikes jumped on the rebound and fed it back to Aichele in the middle for the goal.
A little over two minute later, Christman was back on the score sheet with her second of the game and seventh of the season.
Addie Stang played the ball up to Christman, who took the ball into the circle and beat Kanyuk to the far post to make it 5-1.
The Jays' defense suffocated Moravian, only allowing one shot in the second half and none in the final 13:55. Jones ended the game with four saves.
E-town finishes the regular season at home on Saturday, November 1 when they host Scranton for senior day at 1 p.m.
