ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Emma Christman was one of three Blue Jays to score twice as the Elizabethtown College field hockey team shut out Ferrum 12-0 in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. It was Christman's first two-goal game and her five points were a single-game high this season.
Elizabethtown (9-5) hadn't scored ten-plus goals in a game since October 2007 when they beat Stockton 10-0. The 12 goals were two short of the all-time record of 14 in 1975 against Scranton and then again in 1985 against Widener.
Andrea Keady scored her first of two in the game at the 5:29 mark of the first half. Just over a minute later,
Lisa Foose recorded her first of the season on an assist from
Kaylee Werner. Werner added a goal in the second half.
Christman made it 3-0 with her fourth of the season. She corralled her own rebound in front of the goal and put it home. Her second of the game and fifth of the season came on her first career penalty stroke with less than ten minutes remaining. Keady also scored on a penalty stroke, her first one of the season.
The Jays finished with the second-most shots in a single game since 1996, when they had 63 against Delaware Valley. It was also the highest team point total, 29, since they racked up 25 in the game against Stockton in 2007.
Ferrum (1-12) goalies Courtney Gosslin and Alexis Atkinson kept the game much closer than it could have been. Each played one half and both made 14 saves in their 35 minutes of work. E-town's
Selene Jones saw one shot, but did not need to make a save. It was her second straight shutout and fourth of the season.
Emily Mason,
Jacki Hikes,
Nicole Leaf (two),
Taylor Alwine, and
Lindsey Nester also registered goals for Elizabethtown. Hikes, Nester, Christman, and
Addie Stang also had an assist.
The field hockey team travels to face Drew on Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m.
