Blue Jays blank Christopher Newport 2-0 for seventh shutout

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown's defense held firm all afternoon as the Blue Jays scored goals early and late to post their seventh shutout of the season, 2-0, over Christopher Newport in a match-up of regionally ranked teams Sunday at Ira R. Herr Field.

Trisha Clark pushed a Lauren Berry pass into the back of the net in the second minute before the visiting Captains (8-3-2) could even get settled.

Elizabethtown, ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll, would protect that lead for the rest of the game against a CNU team showing sixth in the South Atlantic Region. The Blue Jays got strong backline play from starters Maria Boretti, Lauren Fredericks, Kendra Mancino, Caroline Novak, and reserves Elyse Koterwas and Haley Vozzella, as well as help from the midfield.

Blue Jay keeper Dana Robidoux, who shut out Susquehanna Saturday without making a save, had a more eventful afternoon against CNU, but made saves on all seven shots that came her way. Robidoux's goals against average dipped to 1.00 for the season with her fourth clean sheet in 12 games.

Koterwas saw extended time on defense and the sophomore played one of her strongest games in blue and gray. In the 86th minute, she was rewarded for her great defensive play in the form of offense. Koterwas got into the box to put a head on Maddie Burkhardt's corner that looked to be going to the upper left corner. Instead, it deflected off a CNU defender's head and into the net, giving Koterwas her second goal of the season.

E-town (9-3) owned a 13-12 edge in shots, but it was the Captains with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Clark, Burkhardt and Lindsay Hoagland totaled two shots each for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown starts a string of three straight Landmark Conference games Wednesday at 4 p.m., at Moravian.
