Field hockey hangs on to defeat Eastern, 2-1

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College field hockey team posted a pair of goals in the first half and rode them to a 2-1 non-conference victory at Eastern Wednesday afternoon. Alyssa Aichele and Jacki Hikes were the goal scorers for E-town, while Selene Jones made seven saves.

Eastern (5-5) had a chance early on off a penalty corner, but Jones was equal to the task, stopping Megan Bolton's shot. The next shot of the game belonged to Elizabethtown (5-5), which turned out to be the opening goal of the game.

Aichele and Hikes have been instrumental to the Jays' offense of late. Aichele had recorded at least a point in her last three games, while Hikes had at least a point in two of her last three.

The two connected on E-town's goal 11 minutes into the contest. Hikes broke down the right side of the field, crossed the ball in front of the goal, where Aichele was waiting for it. Her shot went to the far post for her fourth goal of the season, tying her career high. The goal extended her point streak to four games, with a goal in three of the four.

Three minutes later, Hikes put the Blue Jays up by two. Emily Mason took the penalty corner, one of 17 in the game for E-town. Lisa Foose's pass was deflected toward Hikes by Andrea Keady. Hikes smashed the ball out of midair and into the cage, tying Aichele for the team lead with her fourth goal of the season.

Jess Kinzler had a chance to cut into the Jays' lead for the Eagles, but Jones made back-to-back saves on Kinzler to keep Eastern off the board. The Eagles were held without a shot for a ten minute span before picking it up near the end of the first half. Jones added two more saves before the first 35 minutes were through. E-town led 2-0 at the half.

Kinzler sliced the deficit in half to 2-1, putting home a rebound off Lauren Gay's shot. Moments later, Kendra Hudson and Taylor Alwine had their shots saved off separate penalty corners to keep it a one-score contest.

While Elizabethtown couldn't extend its lead, the defense did the job the remainder of the half, shutting down Eastern. Jones made her final save of the day with a little less than ten minutes left and didn't need to make another stop the rest of the way.

The Jays outshot the Eagles 24-9 and finished with ten more penalty corners (17-7).

The field hockey team jumps back into Landmark Conference play when they travel to face Goucher on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m.
