Baseball takes non-conference loss to Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Elizabethtown baseball team took to the road this afternoon for a non-conference game in Bethlehem against Moravian. The Greyhounds scored early and often in an 11-3 win Tuesday at Gillispie Field.

Elizabethtown (15-8) couldn't muster their recent success at the plate against Moravian's pitchers. The Greyhounds (16-10) provided a potential wrench into the situation as the game progressed, using a stable of pitchers on the mound against the Blue Jays to disrupt any rhythm established by the hitters. MC used seven pitchers in the nine-inning contest with game starter Chris Lansberry receiving the win.

Moravian popped off three runs in its first turn at bat off of three hits and an E-town error. The Greyhounds were aggressive on the base paths stretching out hits and stealing bags to set up the runs. Moravian scored seven runs in total between the third and fifth innings.

E-town once again found the scoring formula late in the game. The Jays unloaded three runs on the opposition in the seventh and eight innings. Ian Smith, who entered the game at shortstop in the sixth inning, connected for a two-run single to center field in the seventh. EC strung together three hits in the top of the eighth. Frank Canuso lead off with a two-base knock down the line for his first career hit. Brian Verdelli and Alex Holbert each singled to the outfield, with Holbert's hit bringing in Canuso for the third E-town run.

The Blue Jays spread the offense around the lineup, most of the replacement players coming through with hits. The Jays were outhit 11-8 over the course of the game. Smith led the way with two RBIs with one swing of the stick. Eight different players accounted for all eight Blue Jay hits.

Moravian's Lansberry picked up his fourth win of the season after allowing a walk as the lone blemish on his stats in the game. Lansberry was one of four Greyhound pitchers to work a spotless full inning in the non-conference contest.
Joey Seremula took the loss after Moravian's quick leap to the lead in the first. Kristopher Davis struck out two batters and held the home team scoreless over the course of two innings late in the game.

E-town returns to conference play Thursday afternoon against Lebanon Valley in Annville. The Jays return home Friday to host the doubleheader beginning at noon.
