Walk-off single prevents comeback, Blue Jays fall to No. 22 Rowan 4-3

GLASSBORO, N.J. — The Elizabethtown College baseball team was three outs away from completing a come-from-behind win against the No. 22 ranked Rowan Profs Tuesday afternoon. E-town carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but a pesky Rowan side tied the game and then scored the decisive fourth run on a bases loaded single to defeat the Blue Jays 4-3.

E-town (17-15, 7-5 CC) trailed twice in the contest before taking a lead in the sixth inning on a defensive blunder and a wild pitch. Todd Leister entered the game in relief of Mark Minisce in the home half of the ninth looking for his sixth save of the season. Rowan (20-11) hitters, not phased by the pitching change, took a lead off single and a left line double to score the knotting run. The Jays were faced with a do or die situation with the bases filled to the brim after two walks. The Owls freshman Casey Grimes was the hero for his team with a pinch-hit single to score Marc Magliaro to secure the walk-off win.

Pitcher Ryan Peterson produced a single out in his brief outing, but picks up his fourth win of the season with the team's last-ditch effort towards a victory in the final inning. Peterson struck out a batter in his third-of-an-inning of work.

Leister was not successful in the save attempt, earning the loss, giving up two runs on three hits with two walks. Kristopher Davis was the game starter for the Jays going five innings, striking out two batters and surrendering the two early Owl runs.

The offense was present in the Blue Jays game. The Blue and Gray outhit the competition 11-8 in the nine inning game. Steve Motika was 3-for-4 at the plate and was responsible for two runs. Pat Mulligan drove in the earned run for E-town.

E-town returns to play in the conference Friday. The Blue Jays are looking for crucial wins to propel them into a potential post-season bid. Elizabethtown heads to Alvernia Friday afternoon and hosts the Crusaders in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.
