GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Elizabethown College baseball bats were silenced by a hot-handed pitcher in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon. Gettysburg's Ryan Taylor held the Blue Jays to three hits in a nine inning, 3-0 win in Gettysburg.
Gettysburg (8-4) muted the Elizabethtown (9-4) offense and in the process handed the Blue Jays their first shutout loss this season. The Bullets' top pitcher, Ryan Taylor, worked over the Blue and Gray hitters in the strike zone on the way to a three-hit gem. Taylor completed the entire nine innings, striking out five batters while yielding no walks.Â
Ian Smith successfully locked in against Taylor twice in the contest to lead the E-town offense. The sophomore was 2-for-2 with two singles, but in the end the Blue Jays couldn't string together a rally to bring in any runners.
Steve Motika sent a hot-shot to the third baseman for the final E-town hit on an infield single in the top of the seventh.Â
The Bullets potted a run in the bottom half of the first, on what eventually became the winning run. Designated hitter Pat Cody's sac fly to left field did the trick for the home side. Gettysburg added on another pair of runs off of four hits in the bottom of the fourth. The home team worked the E-town defense, dropping down bunts and using their speed to set up potential runs. The right side infielders Ben Roessle and Alex Freeman each singled to make those potential runs reality.Â
Jake Hoffstein's record was marked with the loss, bringing him to 1-2 on the season. The junior was burdened with the brunt of the Gettysburg charge. Two relievers split the action in the final two frames.
Joey Seremula returned from an off-season injury, pitching a full inning in his 2012 debut, and
Vaclav Hasik pitched the eighth for the Blue Jays. Combined, the relievers tempered the game to two scoreless innings and just two hits.Â
E-town suits up again Friday afternoon for its first conference contest of the season against Arcadia. The Jays host Arcadia in the weekend's lone nine inning game, before heading to Glenside for Saturday's doubleheader.
