Blue Jays power past York

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Matt Reade homered for the first time this season and Rob Cressman threw six strong innings as Elizabethtown topped York (Pa.) 3-2 in non-conference baseball action at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

The Jays scored a single run in the third, fourth and fifth innings on their way to win number six this season. Kevin Berkheiser was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Steve Motika accounted for E-town's other run with his third RBI of the season.

E-town (6-2) got on the board early in front of the hometown fans. Berkheiser belted a ball straight up the middle to score Reade. The following inning E-town played small-ball to set up another run. Tyler Weary got on base with a single and wasted no time setting himself into scoring position with a steal on the second pitch. Kyle Gable contributed to the set-up game, dropping down the bunt to move Weary to third base. Motika grounded out to the shortstop allowing Weary to make the round trip to home plate for the second run of the game.

The homerun turned out to be vital for Elizabethtown in the late going. After Cressman exited the game, York (2-7) strung together a series of hits to pull within one of Elizabethtown in the 7th inning. Jimmy King knocked in Nic Long while Steve Tretter, the only Spartan with two hits in the game, doubled down the right field line to score pinch runner Dan Solomon.

Cressman earned the win after six scoreless innings of work. Cressman surrendered just three hits and two walks. He struck out three before turning the game over to the bullpen in the seventh. Kristopher Davis tossed an inning and a third of one-hit ball for a hold.

Todd Leister took to the mound in the 9th inning. Leister and the Blue Jays defense compiled a one-two-three half to close out the win. The senior from Stanhope, N.J., picked up his second save of the season with his inning of flawless work.

The Blue Jays return to action Saturdayin a double header with TCNJ. Elizabethtown returns home the next day in a two game set with Penn State Harrisburg at 11:30 and 2 p.m.
