Men's basketball drops home finale to Lycoming

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a game that featured two teams headed in different directions at the end of the season, you would be hard pressed to determine which team on the court was battling for a playoff spot. The Elizabethtown College men's basketball team took playoff hopeful Lycoming to the wire Tuesday night at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays were led by Ben Cable's career-high 34 points, but ultimately fell 69-68 in the final seconds.

Cable, who has been electric in the season's home stretch, finished one rebound shy of a double-double while going 9-of-12 from the foul line. The West York product surpassed his former career-high of 27 and has scored 61 points over his last two games. For the second game in a row, Cable buried seven 3-pointers, again tying a single game program record.

Lee Eckert added 10 points and six boards, while David Feuz delivered nine points and four rebounds off the bench.

Elizabethtown (8-15, 49 CC) controlled the first half right up until the closing minutes. Lycoming (18-6, 8-5 CC) tied things up at 24 just under five minutes remaining. Feuz drained two foul shots and banked one in with ten ticks left to bring E-town a little closer to the Warriors 33-31 halftime lead.

Lycoming kept at the Jays' heels in the second half, applying plenty of defensive pressure. The biggest lead E-town held was five, 60-55, with six minutes left. Eckert's layup with 1:06 left gave Elizabethtown a 68-67 lead. Both teams felt the clock winding down on them, but it was Lycoming finding the answer. Jerald Williams sank two free throws with six seconds left to give the Warriors their first lead in more than eight minutes. The Jays' leading scorer, Cable, had the ball in his hands for one last chance, but it wasn't to be as Lycoming held on for the one-point victory.

Elizabethtown will close out the 2011-12 season on the road against Messiah, Saturday. The Falcons edged the Jays 63-56 in their last meeting. Tip-off from Grantham is scheduled for 4 p.m.
