Blue Jays' offense stalls in loss to Albright

READING, Pa. -- Elizabethtown men's basketball found points hard to come by Saturday afternoon, as Albright held the Blue Jays to their second lowest output of the season in a 68-55 Commonwealth Conference defeat at the Bollman Center. Will Schlosser and Ben Cable were E-town's only players in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Saturday provided a stark contrast from Wednesday night's victory over Widener, in which the Blue Jays (5-9, 1-3 CC) scored 76 points in their fourth best scoring effort of the year. Albright big man Derek Hall made his presence felt early and often. Hall came up with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and a team-high seven rebounds in the first half.

When the Lions (10-5, 1-3 CC) weren't feeding it into the post, they used the quickness of guards Cornell Mickens, Sam Marrella and Dave Singleton to frustrate the Blue Jays. The group helped force nine E-town turnovers via seven steals.

Albright threatened to run off and hide, turning an 8-8 tie into a 20-8 lead with 11:47 to go in the first half. Reserve guard Ben Cable did his best to not allow that to happen. Cable scored six straight points for E-town and then took a charge on the Lions' Pedro Perez. Lee Eckert's put back of a Jon Markel miss cut the Albright advantage all the way back to three, 24-21, with 5:24 left.

A 4-0 run in the final minute of the half gave E-town a shining light as it headed to the break still facing that exact same 3-point margin, 30-27.

The good vibes that the Blue Jays went into the half with, did not follow them back out of the locker room, however. Forwards Kyle Jordan and Shane Irwin took the game into their hands early in the half, putting the Jays down 16 with 14:52 to play. Jordan, Irwin and Hall, Albright's entire front line, combined to score 49 of the Lions' 68 points. The trio was a major reason for Albright's 40-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Rick Ferry's club gave the Jays a chance to reassert itself by going over five minutes without a basket in the second half. E-town would get as close as seven on a Schlosser layup with 7:51 left, but Albright broke its scoreless string moments later as Irwin finished a 3-on-1 fast break and then blocked Eckert on the defense end to put the ball back in his team's possession.

Hall matched Jordan for a team-high with 17 points, but it was his rebounding that was the story. Following his seven-board effort in the first half, Hall grabbed 14 more in the second half to finish with a game, season and career-high 21. The 21 boards were two off Albright's school record and were seven more than Elizabethtown had allowed to any one player this season.

Singleton scored 10 points for Albright, all of the home team's points coming from just six players.

Schlosser hit half of his attempts Saturday (6-of-12) to lead the Blue Jays in the scoring department with 15 points. Schlosser also hit three more 3-pointers, bringing his season total to 26. The son of head coach Bob Schlosser is amongst the top five in the conference in 3-pointers made, a list that includes his teammate, Joe Schwalm (26).

Cable reached double figures for the third time this season, using a 4-of-8 shooting performance to score his 12 points. No other player on the Jays had more than eight points. Andrew Mantz was the player with eight, and he also led the team in rebounds with seven.

E-town will aim to continue its home success Wednesday when it hosts Lebanon Valley at 8 p.m.
