Softball uses five-run first to split with Alvernia

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team scored five times in the first inning of game one, answering three runs by visiting Alvernia. Neither team would score again in the Blue Jays' 5-3 victory. Alvernia earned a split with a 9-4 victory in game two of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at The Nest Saturday afternoon.

Elizabethtown native and senior Shannon Marsico delivered the big hit in the Blue Jays' (13-12, 3-5) monster first inning. Her single to right field scored Lindsey Cooper and Julie Sebastian. Marsico was 2-for-3 in the game.

Earlier in the inning E-town watched as Jennifer Petrilla failed to find the strike zone. Petrilla gave up all five runs and all were earned. She walked four and did retire a single Blue Jay. Sarah Pelletier and Sebastian walked with the bases loaded and Cooper was plunked by Petrilla in the inning to account for the blue and gray's other runs.

Alvernia (13-5, 2-4) had sprung to a 3-0 lead before E-town came to the plate thanks to an RBI single from Danielle Kitchen and a two-run double by Michelle Hermanns.

Deanna Dungee, who replaced Petrilla, was serviceable throughout her six innings pitched. Dungee walked one and struck out six, but did not factor into the decision. Sebastian picked up her ninth win of the season with a three-walk, three-strikeout complete game. Sebastian allowed just four Alvernia hits.

The Crusaders gradually pulled away from E-town in game two. The visitors scored once in the second and three times in the third to open up a 4-1 lead. Hermanns once again delivered for AU, this time with a two-run single down the right field line in the third. Megan McCafferty extended AU's lead to three with a single to second base later in the inning.

An error and an illegal pitch allowed E-town to creep back within 6-3 in the sixth, but Alvernia put three more runs on the board in the seventh to secure its half of the split.

Whitney Breneman was 2-for-2 with an RBI in game two for the Jays, while Courtney Comstock was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Emily Vogel suffered the loss, but again the Blue Jays struggled behind her. Two of Vogel's six runs allowed were earned and E-town had three errors in the contest. Michelle Jensen moved to 5-2 on the season with the win for AU, despite allowing six walks.

Elizabethtown now gets set for a pair with non-conference foe Susquehanna. The second straight set of Crusaders to face the Blue Jays visits The Nest Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.
