Softball swaps wins with Susquehanna

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Sophomore Emily Vogel threw one of her stronger games this season in the second game of Monday's non-conference softball twin bill against Susquehanna and Whitney Breneman aided her classmate by driving in two runs in a 5-4 Elizabethtown College win. Susquehanna forged a split by taking game one, 3-0.

Vogel was in command for a majority of her 14th appearance this season. The Muhlenberg graduate allowed a first inning run to score on a wild pitch, but settled down thereafter. In the second, third and sixth frames Vogel retired the Crusaders (19-5) in order.

In the meantime, the Blue Jays (14-13) were able to build a 5-2 lead. Courtney Comstock reached via an error that allowed Shayna Perella to score E-town's first run. Comstock swiped second base before Breneman came through with her two-run single to right. Shannon Marsico and Comstock came home on the base knock.

E-town extended its lead to 5-1 an inning later. Julie Sebastian led off with a single. Sebastian was replaced on the basepaths by Nadine Yunginger. Yunginger scored on a single from Perella and Perella came across on Amanda Sheckard's single through the left side of Susquehanna's infield.

All of E-town's scoring came against Brooke Garlick (3-2), who left after giving up all five runs in three innings. Garlick was replaced by game one starter Sarah Hoffman. Hoffman blanked the Jays over the final three innings, nearly mirroring what she did in the opener.

Vogel (5-6) has now won two of her last three starts. Her line Monday was a solid seven hits allowed, no walks and two strikeouts. Two of Susquehanna's four runs came in the seventh inning, but Vogel helped put an end to the game with an assist on the final putout of the game.

Hoffman frustrated the Blue Jays in Susquehanna's game one win. The sophomore righty threw a two-hitter to back up three runs from her offense. Sebastian's single in the fourth broke up Hoffman's no-hitter and Breneman added a base hit in the sixth.

Elizabethtown actually had its best chance to get on the board in the bottom of the first. Comstock walked to start the frame and reached third base, but the Jays couldn't drive her in.

Lisa Finizio, the Crusaders' leading hitter, was 3-for-4 in game one, using a combination of hitting skill and speed to constantly put herself on base. Finizio also drove in a run in SU's decisive sixth inning, where it scored all of its runs off Sebastian. Lauren Gilbert also had an RBI and SU's other run scored courtesy of an E-town defensive miscue.

Sebastian (9-7) allowed one earned run on eight hits. Uncharacteristically the junior walked four batters, coming within one of her season-high. She struck out three, however, and has a 2:1 strikeout to walk ration in 2011.

Hoffman, usually the team's No. 2 arm, stepped into the ace role Monday and delivered. She wasn't overpowering, striking out just two, but she was effective. She only needed to face 26 batters and got nine fly outs and 10 ground outs along the way.

The Blue Jays remained above .500 with the split against SU and now looks ahead to a doubleheader at DeSales Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs are 12-8 overall this season and currently hold down second place in the Freedom Conference. First pitch for the late week match-up is scheduled for 3 p.m.
