DeSales sweeps Blue Jays

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- After jumping out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning and holding a lead for much of game one of Thursday's non-conference doubleheader at DeSales, the Elizabethtown College softball team gave up three late runs to drop the 3-2 decision.

The Blue Jays (14-15) suffered another tough loss to the Bulldogs (14-8) in game two by a 10-2 final.

In the first inning of game one, E-town's first three batters reached base on a double, single and fielder's choice. Junior pitcher Julie Sebastian helped her own cause with a one-out RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Shayna Perella singled to right field to score Lindsey Cooper for a 2-0 E-town lead.

For the rest of the game, however, DeSales' pitcher Jen Lococo did not yield a hit, while striking out seven batters.

For most of the game, Sebastian was just as dominant, sitting down the Bulldogs in order in the first, third and fifth innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that Sebastian got into trouble. In the frame, DeSales put together four hits including a homer off the bat of Lococo to put the Jays in a 3-2 hole entering E-town's last at bats.

The Jays went quietly in the seventh as the Bulldogs took game one by the 3-2 margin.

E-town got off to a rocky start in game two when DeSales manufactured five runs in the first two innings for a 5-0 edge.

With two hits in the top of the fourth, the Blue Jays were able to get on the board. Heather Peluso ended up scoring a run on a wild pitch after getting on with a single and advancing on an E-town single and a groundout.

DeSales jumped on the Blue Jays again with four runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-1 lead. In the top of the fifth, the Jays got one back with a run to make it 9-2, when a DeSales fielding error allowed Courtney Comstock to touch home.

The Bulldogs finished off the game with a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth for the 10-2 win and a sweep of the doubleheader.

After starting game one, Sebastian pitched 3.1 innings in relief of Emily Vogel in game two. The Bulldogs outhit the Blue Jays by a 13-7 margin in game two.

For E-town, Comstock and Whitney Breneman recorded base knocks in both games.

Next up for the Blue Jays is a showdown with the Messiah Falcons in Grantham, Pa. The doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
