Blue Jays steal a win from No. 23 Lebanon Valley on Senior Day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team recorded its first win over a top 25 opponent this season in the Blue Jays' 5-3 victory over the No. 23 Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen in game two of the Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at The Nest during Thursday's Senior Day.

Sophomore Emily Vogel pitched all seven innings for the Blue Jays (15-16, 4-6) in game two, allowing three earned runs while striking out three batters.

In game one, a 5-1 win for the Lebanon Valley (23-6, 9-3), E-town's Elly McCarthy smacked her fifth homer of the season, number 14 for her career. The sophomore from Jefferson, Md., is now tied with Lori Lobb for most career home runs by an E-town player with 14.

The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first two innings of game one off pitcher Julie Sebastian, who went all seven innings, striking out four while yielding one earned run.

The Blue Jays remained off the board until the bottom of the seventh when McCarthy hit a leadoff homer to break up the shutout. Later in the inning, Lindsey Cooper singled and advanced on a groundout, but was stranded on second when Lebanon Valley recorded the third out to end game one.

E-town fared better in game two, however. After the Flying Dutchmen scored a first-inning run, the Jays tied things up in the bottom of the frame. Whitney Breneman got on base with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and a fly out to right field, then reached home on a Cooper RBI-single up the middle to even things at 1-1.

Cooper powered the offense again in the bottom of the third with another RBI single to allow sophomore Courtney Comstock to score.

E-town went up for good thanks to three-run fourth. Breneman started the scoring with a two-RBI single to plate Shannon Marsico and Nadine Yunginger. Next up was McCarthy, who knocked an RBI single of her own to make the score 5-1 after four innings of play.

In the top of sixth, Lebanon Valley made things interesting with two runs to cut E-town's lead down to 5-3, but the Jays were able to hold on to secure the key conference win. E-town is able stay in the playoff hunt with the win to move into a three-way tie for fourth.

McCarthy finished the day with four hits and two runs batted in for the home side. Brenaman and Cooper ended up with three base knocks each as well.

Marsico and Heather Peluso were honored during the Senior Day celebration for their dedication and effort on the field for the Blue Jays.

Up next for E-town is a showdown with the No. 6 Messiah Falcons on Monday in Grantham, Pa. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
