Softball drops twinbill at No. 6 Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team, fresh off its first win over a top 25 team this season on Thursday, could not repeat the feat on Monday and dropped a pair of Middle Atlantic Conference road games to the No. 6 Messiah Falcons in Grantham, Pa.

The Blue Jays (15-18, 4-8) fell behind in game one and couldn't recover as the Falcons (27-5, 9-3) took the 7-0 decision. In game two, Messiah was again able to pull out a win, this time by a 9-3 margin.

Sophomore catcher Courtney Comstock started the day with a leadoff single to left, and Lindsey Cooper singled in the top of the second, but that was all the offense E-town would compile in game one.

Messiah's Jocelyn Hickey went all seven innings, allowing those two hits and a walk, while striking out four to earn her ninth win on the mound.

The Falcons picked up single runs in the first, second and fourth innings before adding two in each of last two frames to get their seven runs.

In game two, after Messiah picked up a first inning run, the Blue Jays broke through with a run of their own in the top of the second. After Cooper doubled to center and advanced on a passed ball, she was able to touch home on a Shayna Perella RBI groundout to even things at one all.

The Falcons regained the lead in the next inning on two hits and three runs for a 4-1 advantage.

E-town fired back with two runs in the top of the fifth. With the bases chock-full of Blue Jays, Comstock delivered a single that plated two to trim the Falcons' lead down to 4-3.

Messiah's offense turned up the heat in the final two frames, however, with a combined five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to come away with a 9-3 win.

Comstock led the Jays' offense with a hit in both games, while Jaclyn Merkel scored four runs in game two for the Falcons and recorded two hits, including a homer in the first inning.

The Blue Jays will be on the road again tomorrow to take on Gettysburg for a doubleheader. Game one is set to get underway at 3 p.m.
