Sebastian leads Blue Jays to sweep of Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  -- Junior Julie Sebastian was productive on the mound and at the plate in both games of Tuesday's doubleheader to help the Elizabethtown College softball team take two from the Gettysburg Bullets.

In game one, an 11-5 E-town (17-18) win, Sebastian went 4-for-5 at the dish with three runs batted in. The junior from Broomall, Pa. pitched all seven innings, allowing five runs and striking out three to pick up the win. In the Blue Jays' 9-8 game two victory, Sebastian had three RBIs, going 2-for-3 at the plate. She also came in out of the bullpen to hurl the final 2.2 innings of one-hit ball to earn the save.

The Bullets (19-17) did not go down without a fight in either contest. In game one, the two teams combined for 31 hits, including 14 by Gettysburg, and nearly came back from a 9-2 deficit in game two.

To start off the day, the Blue Jays jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game one. RBIs came from Sebastian and Elly McCarthy, who finished with four hits in the contest.

The Bullets wasted no time in tying things up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to even things at 2-2.

Gettysburg took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second, only to see that advantage evaporate, thanks to a three-run E-town third. Runs in the inning came courtesy of a Heather Peluso RBI single, a fielder's choice and Courtney Comstock walk with the bases loaded.

Over the next three innings, the Blue Jays tacked on two more runs, while Gettysburg added one of its own.

Then in the top of the seventh, the E-town offense exploded for four runs on four hits. Runs came on RBIs from Lindsey Cooper, McCarthy and two from Sebastian to give the Jays an 11-5 win.

The 17 hits by the Jays marks a season high for the team.

Game two was another slugfest, with the teams combining for 24 base knocks. The Blue Jays were also aided by six Gettysburg fielding errors in the game.

After the first inning, just like in game one, the teams were tied at two all.

E-town's big inning came in the top of the third, when the Jays sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on five hits and four Gettysburg errors. Sebastian and freshman Shayna Perella recorded two RBIs each in the frame.

On the mound, Emily Vogel was able to hold the Bullets to five runs through four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, however, Vogel ran into trouble. The sophomore recorded one out in the frame before being charged with five runs as the Bullets cut E-town's lead down to 9-8.

The Blue Jays were able to hold on down the stretch, limiting Gettysburg to just one hit in the final two frames to pull out the win.

In the game, Comstock led all batters with three hits, while Gettysburg had five players with two hits, including Abby Ferguson who knocked in three runs. McCarthy combined for six hits and four runs scored over the two games for the Jays.

On deck for E-town is a doubleheader at Albright on Saturday. Game one is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
