Staib gets 100th win as Jays sweep Albright to end season

READING, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team ended its season on a high note with a sweep of the Albright Lions Saturday in Reading, Pa. The Blue Jays captured game one by a score of 8-1, before coming from behind for a 4-3 victory in game two. The game one victory was also the 100th of head coach Kathy Staib's career.

Sophomore Elly McCarthy became E-town's all-time career home run leader when she hit a leadoff homer in the top of the sixth inning in game one for her sixth of the season and 15th of her career. She passes Lori Lobb for first in program history.

The home run was just one of McCarthy's game-high four hits in the first game for the Blue Jays (18-18, 5-8). She also racked up three more hits in game two for seven on the day.

Junior Julie Sebastian, who picked up the win on the mound in game one for the Jays, went all seven innings, yielding five hits while striking out a career-high seven batters. She also made an impact at the dish in the game, smacking a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, putting the Lions (9-26, 3-10) in a 5-0 hole.

The Jays added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh for an 8-1 win. E-town compiled 14 hits in the first contest. Whitney Breneman, Caroline Schuster and Nadine Yunginger picked up two hits apiece in the contest.

In game two, E-town picked up right where it left off, scoring a run in the top of the first on a Sebastian sacrifice fly to plate Courtney Comstock.

The Lions responded with three runs of their own for a 3-1 lead after one. From there, pitcher Emily Vogel was dominant, allowing just four more hits in the contest en route to her eighth win of the year.

Facing a 3-1 deficit, the Blue Jays battled back with a run in the top of the third and two in the fourth for a 4-3 advantage. E-town got two RBIs from McCarthy, and one from Comstock over that stretch.

In the sixth, the Lions got two runners on, but Vogel was able to work her way out of a jam, and went on to retire the last three batters of the game in the seventh to secure the win.

Breneman and Comstock picked up three hits each, combining for six of E-town's eight base knocks in game two.

Senior Shannon Marsico started both games in center field, playing her final games in a Blue Jay uniform. Heather Peluso, also finishing up her E-town career, recorded a hit and a run batted in on the day.

Staib has produced winning seasons in each of her last two campaigns, and has led the Blue Jays to 15 wins or more three times since 2007. The seventh-year head coach is just the second softball coach in program history to eclipse 100 career wins. Staib joins a club that up until today included only Barb Shenk, who amassed 141 wins in two coaching stints spanning eight seasons at the school (1986-88, 1997-2001).
