McCarthy's nine RBIs help softball take two from Juniata

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In Elly McCarthy's sixth plate appearance in the tenth inning of game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, the sophomore cranked a walk-off grand slam to give the Elizabethtown College softball team a 16-13 win over the Juniata Eagles at the Nest in Elizabethtown, Pa.

The Blue Jays (12-11) also handled the Eagles (2-20) in game two by a 10-5 margin to earn a sweep and the team's fourth win in five games.

McCarthy finished the day with nine runs batted in, including seven in game one, and became the first Blue Jay to knock in seven runs in a game in the last 10 years.

The first game, scheduled as a seven inning game, went into extras thanks to a Juniata comeback.

E-town got off to a 9-0 lead though three innings. In the bottom of the first, Courtney Comstock scored on a McCarthy sacrifice fly. Then in the second, the Jays pup up a six spot with RBIs coming off the bat of Amanda Sheckard, Comstock and Whitney Breneman. McCarthy also added a two-run home run in the inning.

Comstock and Shannon Marsico knocked in two more runs in the third before the Eagles got on the board.

Juniata's bats woke up in the fourth when the visitors scored four runs to get back into the game. E-town fought back with the team's tenth run of the day on a Lindsey Cooper double. Not to be outdone, the Eagles responded with six more runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 10.

After both teams put up zeros in the seventh, the Eagles looked like they had a win with two runs the top of the eighth. However, the Blue Jays matched them run-for-run in the bottom of the frame.

Again in the tenth, Juniata pulled ahead with one run to take a 13-12 lead, but the Jays loaded the bases and McCarthy hit her second home run of the day to win it for E-town in the bottom of the tenth.

Julie Sebastian went all 10 innings to get the win for the Jays. Although Sebastian gave up 13 runs, 10 of them were unearned.

In game two, E-town jumped out to another early lead with six runs in the first two innings for a 6-2 advantage. The Jays put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Comstock did most of the damage in the inning with a three-run triple.

Juniata added three runs in the final two innings, but it was not enough to salvage a split in the doubleheader as E-town took the 10-5 win. The game was called after the top of the sixth due to darkness.

Emily Vogel picked up her fourth win in the circle for the Jays this season. The sophomore yielded 11 hits, but held the Eagles to three earned runs to get the victory.

Next up for the Jays is a home Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against the Alvernia Crusaders at 1 p.m., Saturday.
