ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — It may not have been an out-of-this-world performance, but it was sure one to remember for the Czech Republic's
Vaclav Hasik. Elizabethtown's freshman pitcher threw eight strong innings in the best start of his young career and the Blue Jay bats backed him up in a 12-1 non-conference drubbing of Moravian Wednesday afternoon at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.
Hasik's lead was never in doubt. The Blue Jays (11-10) gave him three runs of support in the first and opened a sizable gap with eight runs over the fifth and sixth innings.
Brian Verdelli and
Ian Smith took care of the offense in the first. Verdelli brought home E-town's first run of the game with a single to the pitcher that scored
Andrew Gordon. Later in the frame,
Ian Smith drove in two of his three runs with a single to right off Moravian (16-7) starter Robert Solano.
Hasik and Solano —both first year players— engaged in a pitching duel for the next three innings, with neither allowing a run. Hasik, in fact, did not allow more than four batters to come to the dish in an inning until the seventh inning.
E-town finally got to Solano again in the fifth when
Dillon Tagle doubled down the left field line to plate two more runs.
Steve Motika and Gordon scored on Tagle's 12th and 13th RBIs of the year. The sophomore added his 14th in the sixth on a sac fly.
In the sixth, the guys wearing blue and gray piled on six more runs to take an 11-0 lead. Gordon and
Shane Hosler both picked up RBIs through bases loaded walks, while
Pat Mulligan and
Ian Smith each drove in a run by singling up the middle.
Hasik started to tire late. Four of his six hits allowed came in innings seven and eight, as did the only Greyhounds run of the game. Dave Zubia singled with two outs in the eighth, scoring Joseph Connell. E-town's youngster didn't blink, though, catching Jason Huber looking to end the inning. Hasik struck out four in the ballgame and threw 62 of his 97 pitches for strikes.
The Blue Jays won for the fifth time in six tries. Smith was 3-for-5 and Gordon scored three times for the home team. Mulligan also came up with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Motika scored twice, but saw his 13-game hitting streak come to a close. He only recorded two official plate appearances after walking twice.
Zubia accounted for half of Moravian's offense with a 3-for-3 afternoon.
A monumental Commonwealth Conference showdown with nationally-ranked Alvernia lies ahead for E-town this coming weekend. The Blue Jays and 19th-ranked Crusaders meet Friday at 3:30 p.m., at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium, before playing two in Reading on Saturday.
