Juniata uses late-inning runs to top Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — In Wednesday's non-conference baseball game at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium, the visiting Juniata Eagles racked up six runs over the seventh and eighth innings to top the Elizabethtown Blue Jays by a 6-3 final.

For the first five innings, the game remained deadlocked at 0-0, thanks to quality pitching that limited both offenses to two hits apiece.

For the Blue Jays (15-16), sophomore Zack Mills got the start on the mound, pitching two innings and holding the Eagles (15-19) without a hit.

Senior Greg Katz got the ball for the next two innings, again holding Juniata scoreless while yielding two hits. He was followed by freshman Joey Seremula, who did not allow a hit in two scoreless frames.

On the other side, Juniata starter Will Hoffman was equally impressive, keeping E-town off the board until the bottom of the sixth inning. That is when Matt Reade singled to right center field to allow Steve Motika to touch home.

In the top of the seventh, the Eagles took a 2-1 lead with two runs off E-town pitcher Jake Hoffstein, who ended up taking the loss on the day.

After a scoreless bottom of the seventh, Juniata added four runs on five hits in the top of the eighth to stretch the Eagles' lead to 6-1.

Then in the bottom of the frame, senior Ryan Donahue reached on a walk and advanced to third on Steve Motika's double to the outfield. With the hit, Motika extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Donahue ended up scoring when the next hitter, Dillon Tagle, grounded out to first.

The Blue Jays made things tighter in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a Jon Bacher RBI single that plated Mike Stobbe, who led of the inning with a single up the middle. After an Andrew Gordon walk, the Eagles turned to Marty Hauck, who picked up the save to drop the Jays, 6-3.

On the afternoon, seven different players pitched for E-town, who had won four games in a row entering Wednesday.

For Juniata, Benjamin Mersky and Ian Thorne recorded three hits each to lead the offense, while Tagle and Donahue were on base three times apiece for E-town with both registering one hit and two walks.

The Blue Jays will finish off their regular season schedule with a weekend series with the Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen. On Friday, the two teams will tangle for a 3:30 p.m. nine-inning affair at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium before traveling to Annville for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
