GLENSIDE, Pa. —
Andrew Gordon belted three doubles and his Blue Jay teammates mashed four others in the Elizabethtown College baseball team's 17-9 Commonwealth Conference victory at Arcadia Saturday afternoon.
Gordon is a fixture in the two-hole of E-town's batting order and he showed why against the Knights. The senior from Peach Bottom reached base five times and was driven home on three occasions as the Blue Jays (8-9, 2-2) compiled 10 or more runs in a game for the third time in their last four tries.
All 17 of Elizabethtown's runs came in innings two through six.
Matt Reade got on base to start the second courtesy of an Arcadia eror and later scored on a
Kevin Berkheiser single. Berkheiser, who has driven in runs in three of the last four games, came across to make it 2-0 E-town on
Ian Smith's double to right center field.
Arcadia (1-16, 0-7) tied the game in the bottom of the second on an error and an RBI ground out by Nick Petroski. The 2-2 deadlock would not last long. Elizabethtown responded with three runs in the third and seven in the fourth to take a 12-2 advantage.
Gordon set the table in the third with a lead off double and scored when
Pat Mulligan drew a bases-loaded walk. Berkheiser played the nemesis of Arcadia starter Jason Heryla (0-5) once again with a two-run single back through the box.
Heryla pitched into the fourth, but E-town's most productive offensive inning of the afternoon chased the winless senior from the game. Heryla allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on nine hits in his three innings of work. He struggled to find the plate, as evidenced by his four walks and one hit batter.
Kyle Gable reached base safely for the eighth consecutive game when he led off the fourth with a bunt single against Heryla. Gordon's second double of the day plated Gable for the first of E-town's seven runs in the frame. Reade and
Dillon Tagle both hit two-run doubles and Mulligan added a run-scoring single in an inning in which the Blue Jays sent 11 batters to the plate.
Though he allowed four runs to AU in the home half of the fourth, Elizabethtown starter
Wayne Leonard threw five innings to pick up his second win of the season. Leonard walked two and struck out one, surrendering eight hits along the way.
E-town scored once in the fifth and four more times in the sixth to cement the game in its favor.
Steve Motika led off the fifth with a single into left field that extended his team-best and season-long hitting streak to 11 games.
Reade joined Berkheiser with three RBIs in the game when he drove in Motika on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Tagle became the third Blue Jay with three runs batted in an inning later with a single that also brought in Motika.
Every single player in the batting order registered at least one hit for the Jays, while seven of the nine starters had multi-hit performances. Gordon was 4-for-6 to lead the way.
Anthony Heaps, Motika and Smith all picked up three hits in the win.
Jerry Smith helped Arcadia's cause with a 4-for-5 effort at the dish and two RBIs. Petroski and Mike McElhatton also contributed a pair of RBIs for the Knights, who fell to 1-6 all-time against Elizabethtown.
Jake Hoffstein pitched two innings of much needed effective relief for E-town. Hoffstein allowed a single hit in picking up the final six outs of Saturday's game.
The Blue Jays and Knights meet again tomorrow for a twin bill at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. Game one begins at noon.
