Breneman's bat lifts Blue Jays to pair of wins

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Whitney Breneman was a perfect 7-for-7 at the dish Wednesday, and her monster effort helped the Elizabethtown College softball team run its winning streak to four games at the Spring Games at National Training Center. The Blue Jays earned a 10-0 win over The Sage Colleges and a 7-6 defeat of Monmouth (Ill.).

Breneman registered three hits, three RBIs, scored four runs and came within a double of hitting for the cycle in the morning game against The Sage Colleges (0-3). She did so in just five innings, as the Blue Jays brought the run rule into effect with a healthy lead.

For a third consecutive game three happened to be the magic number, as E-town (4-2) put that many runs on the board in the first inning once again. Courtney Comstock led off with a single through the left side and Breneman followed it with her second RBI triple of the season. Lindsey Cooper and Caroline Schuster added RBI singles against Sage starter Jackie Petteys in a three-run, four-hit first inning.

That run support was more than enough for Blue Jays' starter Julie Sebastian (2-1). The junior from Broomall, Pa., would not allow a run in tossing a five-inning complete game shutout. Sebastian struck out six and gave up just three hits. She was also productive on offense, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Though Sebastian didn't need any more runs, her teammates gave them to her. Breneman was responsible for E-town's first home run of the season when she roped a Petteys offering out of the park to center field in the second. Breneman came across the plate in the fourth as well to give the Jays a 5-0 lead.

The Blue and Gray would put the game away in the fifth with a five-run inning. Schuster (single), Sarah Pelletier (double) and Shannon Marsico (RBI single) strung together back-to-back-to-back hits to get things going. Comstock and Breneman both walked, with Breneman's free pass accounting for her third RBI of the game. Cooper would deliver a two-run single and Elly McCarthy added an RBI base knock to give the Blue Jays their final margin of victory.

Pettey's had a rough outing, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings as she was dealt the loss. Cooper finished a perfect 4-for-4 for Elizabethtown and added three RBIs. The four hits mark a single-game best for E-town in 2011. Sarah Church was the last Blue Jay to pick up four hits in a game prior to Cooper's effort Wednesday. Church was 4-for-4 in a game against Albright on Apr. 4, 2009.

E-town banged out 14 hits in all, with 10 of those coming from the top-five spots in the lineup.

Monmouth (Ill.) and its potent lineup greeted the Jays with two runs in the first inning of E-town's afternoon game. Breneman once again was the momentum-starter as she singled into right field with one out in the inning. A few batters later Sebastian doubled all the way to the left field wall to drive in a pair of runs that knotted the game at two.

McCarthy's two-run double in the third pushed E-town ahead 4-2 and the Blue Jays tacked on another two in the fourth on a Comstock RBI single and a wild pitch that plated the E-town catcher.

Trailing 7-3 heading to the seventh, the Fighting Scots (3-3) had the amazing opportunity to win the game, but Elizabethtown and pitcher Emily Vogel (2-1) would escape with a one-run win. Four singles and an error allowed Monmouth to rally within 7-6. The situation wasn't pretty for the Jays as their opponent had runners on the corners with just one out. That changed instantly as Comstock threw out Kelsey Barnes at second base for the second out and Vogel struck out Staccy Kabat to end the game.

Breneman was 3-for-3 to put the finishing touches on her seven hit day. She had help at the top of the lineup again, as Comstock also cracked three hits and scored three runs.

Vogel won her second straight decision by striking out two and allowing no walks. It's the second game in a row she's pitched without giving up a base on balls. Thought the final numbers may not be as pretty as hoped for, Vogel pitched effectively, allowing just three runs on eight hits (seven singles) prior to the Fighting Scots' three-run seventh.

Rain is in the forecast for Thursday, but as of right now E-town is scheduled to take on Northwestern (Minn.) at 1 p.m., and Penn State Behrend at 5 on Thursday.
