Sebastian turns back Thiel

CLERMONT, Fla. -- It was a crazy day for the Elizabethtown College softball team. They dealt with everything from rain and cancelations to schedule changes and game delays. At the end of the night, however, it was Julie Sebastian's three-hitter and a four-run third inning that carried the Blue Jays past Thiel 4-0 at the National Training Center Thursday.

Sebastian struck out four and got quick outs in her most productive game of the season to date. She allowed just single hits in the second, fifth and seventh innings and did not walk a batter for the third straight start. She has now picked up back-to-back complete game shutouts and has six total for her career.

All of Elizabethtown's offense came in the bottom of the third, as the four runs came via five hits and a Thiel (0-7) error. Shannon Marsico and Courtney Comstock roped consecutive singles to start the inning and Whitney Breneman followed with a double off the left field wall that drove Marsico in.

Lindsey Cooper's single brought home Comstock before a botched catch by Tomcats' middle infielder Jackie Belsito on Cooper's steal attempt allowed Breneman to score making it 3-0. Sebastian helped her own cause with an RBI single to center field and the Blue Jays (5-2) had built a sizeable lead.

Thiel had no luck getting to the junior righty, however. She retired nine of the next 10 batters she faced over innings four, five and six. Two of those were quick 1-2-3 innings.

Emily Batiz also went the distance for Thiel. She struck out six and walked three, but did give up the four earned runs on eight Elizabethtown hits. Batiz was two-thirds of the Tomcats' offense as well, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles. Danielle Dwyer added a double for Thiel.

Comstock was 3-for-4 for the Blue and Gray, including a first inning triple. The Central Columbia graduate has 10 hits in her last 17 at-bats.

E-town's first game of the day, scheduled against Northwestern (Minn.) at 1 p.m., was canceled due to rain. The Jays were then slated to play Penn State Behrend, but upon arriving to the National Training Center were confronted with schedule conflicts that ended up changing their opponent to Thiel.

The Blue Jays will finish off their Florida trip with a pair of games Friday. They take on Simmons at 9 a.m., before playing Babson at 11 a.m.
