Softball splits on final day in Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Courtney Comstock continued to see the ball well in the Elizabethtown College softball team's final day at the Spring Games at National Training Center Friday. The sophomore from Bloomsburg went 2-for-3 with her first collegiate home run in the Jays 8-5 win over Simmons in the morning's first game, but E-town would have to settle for a split after a rough first inning led to a 6-3 loss to Babson in its Florida finale.

Comstock led off the game against Simmons (2-6) with a solo shot to left field off of Sami Hodgkins. The backstop would collect another hit, score two runs and drive in two runs in what turned out to be Elizabethtown's (6-3) sixth straight win.

Leading 3-1 after three innings, the Sharks cut E-town's lead to one on an unearned run in the top of the fourth. Simmons was nearly out of the water in the home half of the inning before an error by Steph Murray at the hot corner gave the Blue Jays renewed life. They took full advantage with RBI singles from Lindsey Cooper and Elly McCarthy and a two-run double by Julie Sebastian. The four unearned runs put E-town comfortably ahead 7-2.

Comstock's single in the fifth drove in Pelletier to extend the lead to 8-2, an advantage Elizabethtown would hold until the sixth. Simmons would drive two runs across and one more in the seventh to close the gap. Fortunately for the Jays on Simmons' last run Courteney Collier got greedy trying to go from first to third and was thrown out by Comstock at third to end the ballgame.

Emily Vogel went the distance for her third win of the season. She did not yield a walk and struck out one while allowing two earned runs.

Game two did not get off to the start the Blue Jays and their faithful supporting cast of parents and friends would have hoped. A tight strike zone made life difficult for Sebastian. She gave up six first inning runs to Babson (1-0), playing its first game of the 2011 season. Though frustrated by the outcome, the junior pitcher settled down and did not allow a run the rest of the way.

E-town could not crack Beavers' starter Megan Brain over the course of five innings. Brain tossed two-hit ball in earning the win and mowed down just one batter.

Brain's replacement in the sixth, Christina Miquel, was greeted rudely by Sebastian who hammered a pitch to right center field and well out of the park for a three-run home run that cut Babson's lead in half. The Blue Jays got their first runner on in the seventh, but a double play quickly squashed a comeback bid.

Sebastian's numbers were skewed due to the poor first inning with all six runs earned and a season-high five walks. Control had not been an issue for the Marple Newtown product, who had gone her three games prior without allowing a walk.

E-town wrapped up its slate of nine games in six days with a 6-3 record. They now return home and get set for a non-conference doubleheader at Muhlenberg on Tuesday Mar. 15.
