Blue Jays stun Muhlenberg with late rally, split doubleheader

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown College used its final at-bats and then some to rally from a 2-0 game one deficit in non-conference softball action at Muhlenberg Tuesday afternoon. Elly McCarthy homered to lead off the seventh and Julie Sebastian followed it up with a shot of her own in the eighth as the Blue Jays stunned the Mules 5-3 in extra innings.

The situation seemed bleak as McCarthy stepped in against Mules' starter Ashley Brewer. It was, in fact, McCarthy who led the team in round-trippers a season ago, but up until the final inning Tuesday Brewer had allowed just three hits and no more than one in any single inning. That didn't faze the sophomore from Jefferson, Md., though as she took a pitch out to left for her first home run of the season.

Five batters later, senior Shannon Marsico found enough room up the middle to single home both Heather Peluso and Nadine Yunginger. The Blue Jays (7-4) could not hold the lead, though, as Muhlenberg (6-3) got a Brewer double and a Kelly Kline single to tie the game at three after seven.

With the tiebreaker rules in effect, Whitney Breneman started on second in the eighth, advanced to third on Lindsey Cooper's sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch by Brewer to put E-town back in front 4-3. In the same at-bat Sebastian clocked a ball over the wall in center to give the Jays a bit of breathing room.

Sebastian, herself, would then shut the door on the Mules with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. The junior pitcher improved to 4-2 on the season. She allowed 12 hits and three runs (all earned) in going the distance. Sebastian did not walk or strike out a batter.

McCarthy, Sebastian and Marsico each had two hits to pace the E-town offense, as they hit Brewer eight times.

Muhlenberg would answer in game two with seven first inning runs off of the Blue Jays' Emily Vogel. Though only three earned runs were charged to Vogel thanks to four fielding blunders, the Mules were looking at a split of the doubleheader.

Realizing there were still six innings left, the Blue Jays dug in and fought back again. With the score now 8-0 in favor of the hosts, E-town brought four runs across in the top of the third to cut the lead in half. Courtney Comstock started things off with an RBI single, Breneman had a two-run double to the gap in left and Caroline Schuster singled to right to bring home a run.

The score remained unchanged at 8-4 until the fifth when Elizabethtown struck with four more. After the first two runners reached base in the inning for the Jays, the Mules pulled Alyssa Bruckner in favor of Angie Sisco. Sisco allowed a single to Cooper that loaded the bases and McCarthy unloaded them with a grand slam.

Even though the Mules gave up their big lead, they managed to hold on by scoring a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth for a 10-9, one-run victory.

McCarthy finished with the four RBIs from the grand slam and Breneman had three runs batted in. Comstock collected a team-high three hits including her second double of the season, while Amanda Sheckard was 2-for-3.

For Muhlenberg, Brewer had three hits and three runs scored in game two. Kline and Jess Kasza each knocked in two runs. Sisco earned the victory despite giving up three runs over three innings. Sebastian relieved Vogel and yielded two runs over five innings. Because E-town came back to tie the game up, Sebastian was hit with the loss and fell to 4-3.
