Softball lets one slip away as No. 25 Moravian sweeps

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Success has been plentiful for the 25th-ranked Moravian College softball team over the past few seasons. Tuesday afternoon Elizabethtown showed it could play on the level of a team that reached the NCAA Division III World Series a season ago. Playing on the same level and beating a team are two drastically different things, however, and the Blue Jays saw a two-run seventh inning lead in game two disappear as they left Bethlehem empty handed with 3-0 and 8-7 losses.

Game one was played in a brisk hour and nine minutes. All three runs for the Greyhounds came in the bottom of the first. Freshman catcher Cassie Ernst delivered a two-run single and then scored on an error. Jenna Carmon needed little more than that, as the Moravian righty struck out four while scattering three hits over seven innings.

Carmon did not give up an extra base hit and improved to 5-1 on the season.

Elizabethtown had its best chance to score in the second inning, when it registered two of its three hits in the contest. Heather Peluso and Amanda Sheckard put together consecutive singles with one out and Peluso reached third with under two outs, but the Blue Jays (7-6) could not crack the goose egg on the scoreboard.

Julie Sebastian was efficient once again, but in a losing effort. Sebastian gave up four hits and whiffed three. She did not allow an earned run.

Carmon was back in the circle for game two, but she would not blank E-town again. Courtney Comstock led off the game with a single and Elly McCarthy drove her home with a single into left field as the Jays jumped on top 1-0.

Moravian (11-3) was able to match E-town's run with one in the bottom of the inning, and it was a trend that continued throughout the game. The Blue Jays scored twice in the fourth, answered by two from the Hounds. Three in the fourth from the visitors, two more from the home side in the same frame.

It made for a tense affair, and unfortunately Moravian found two final runs in its last at-bats. A sacrifice fly from Melissa Cottone tied the game at seven and Ernst scored on an error at third to end the ballgame.

McCarthy finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and Whitney Breneman connected on her second home run of the year in the sixth.

Ernst scored three times for the Greyhounds, who improved to 31-7 all-time against Elizabethtown. Carmon was the only Moravian player with a multi-hit game as her two hits were a quarter of the team's in the game. The Blue Jays also had eight hits.

Emily Vogel was tagged with the loss after allowing all eight runs (five earned) in 6.2 innings. Carmon gave up seven runs (three earned) and received a no decision. Alyssa Fegely struck out four and yielded just a single hit to pick up the win for MC.

E-town opens Commonwealth Conference play Saturday when it hosts a doubleheader against Widener. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
