Blue Jays drop Commonwealth-opening doubleheader to Widener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.  --Julie Sebastian and Heather Peluso provided some pop Saturday afternoon, with each player connecting for a home run, but it was Widener that took both games against the Elizabethtown College softball team in the Blue Jays' Commonwealth Conference-opening doubleheader at The Nest. The Pride snuck by 5-3 in the first game, before scoring ten runs over the final two innings for a 14-2 game two victory.

An error in the top of the second kept the inning alive for Shelby Mackintosh, and she made the Jays pay with a three-run homer to left. The home run was Mackintosh's first of the season and it set the Pride (10-7, 3-1 CC) on their way.

Widener added another run in the third. Meg Phillips singled, advanced to second on an error, stole third, and scored on passed ball. Phillips would double in the fifth as well. The Pride's leading hitter, Phillips finished game one 2-for-4.

Sebastian got two back for E-town (7-8, 0-2 CC) in the fifth with a two-run shot down the left field line. It was the third time in 2011 Sebastian has struck with the long ball. The two RBIs also pulled her to within one of Elly McCarthy's team-leading 14.

Widener stretched its lead to 5-2 in the sixth on Kelsey Shultz's double to center field and an RBI single to right by Casey Hargadon.

Sebastian gave up just one earned run and six hits in falling to 4-5 on the season. She did a pretty effective job working through Widener's lineup for most of the game, but was hurt by some defensive miscues and a few timely hits by the Pride. Sebastian struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Shultz (9-2), Widener's leader in wins, added to that total with a nine-strikeout effort. She went the distance and also gave up only six hits while walking none.

Widener took an early lead in game two as well, using an RBI double by Shultz and an error to pull ahead 2-0. The score remained that way until the bottom of the second. McCarthy began the inning with a single before Heather Peluso stepped in and cranked the sixth home run of her career –and first this season- to left center field to tie the game.

Mackintosh was back at it for the Pride in the top of the sixth. She doubled over the head of Caroline Schuster at third and down the left field line to bring in Hargadon for a 3-2 lead. Mackintosh entered play Saturday with just two RBIs, but she drove in four over the course of the doubleheader.

Ahead 4-2 in the sixth, Widener put up four runs to extend its lead to 8-2. E-town pitcher Emily Vogel nearly escaped a two-out bases loaded jam, but back-to-back two-run hits were the sophomore's undoing. Astyn DiNorscia singled in a pair and Hargadon followed with a two-run double down the right field line. All four runs were unearned.

The Pride tacked on six more in the seventh to put a stamp on their victory. DiNorscia led the way with three RBIs for Widener, while Jody Salvatore, Jen Nance and Hargadon all knocked in two. The Pride totaled 20 hits in the contest and had three players each register three hits.

Shultz pitched for the second straight game and she allowed just three hits. She did not give up another run following Peluso's two run shot. Shultz struck out four. Vogel took the loss for E-town striking out four, but giving up eight earned runs over the course of seven innings.

Elizabethtown will aim to bounce back Monday afternoon when it hosts Ursinus in a non-conference doubleheader at The Nest. Game one begins at 3 p.m.
