Sebastian simmers Ursinus bats to help softball split

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team got back in the win column Monday afternoon, using a strong outing from junior pitcher Julie Sebastian to pick up a 3-1 victory over Ursinus in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at The Nest. The Bears would forge a split, however, taking game two, 6-0.

Nearly the first half of Monday's opener was dominated by the pitchers. E-town's (8-9) Sebastian and Ursinus' Caitlin Whelan took turns putting zeros up on the board through three innings. After Sebastian cruised through a 1-2-3 fourth inning, the Jays gave her a lead in the bottom of the inning.

Elly McCarthy doubled to lead off the inning and Heather Peluso walked to put a pair of runners on. After Amanda Sheckard moved both up a base with a groundout, freshman Alyssa Vasaturo brought them both home. Her single down the right field line opened the scoring and gave her the first two RBIs of her E-town career.

The Blue Jays tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. Whitney Breneman put herself in scoring position with a one out double and later scored on McCarthy's sacrifice fly.

The story of the afternoon was Sebastian, though. She mowed down the Bears hitters 1-2-3 in four different innings during her masterpiece. Sebastian scattered six hits, struck out three and walked none to pull her record to an even 5-5 this season.

E-town, which outhit Ursinus 7-6, got each of its seven hits from a different batter in the game.

Rachael Vietheer was 2-for-3 for visiting UC (7-8), and Kristen Gallagher knocked in the Bears only run of the contest in the sixth. Caitlin Whelan suffered the loss for UC, allowing all three runs and striking out five in seven frames.

The Blue Jays tried to make it a 2-for-2 day, but Ursinus' Jennilyn Weber kept E-town off balance for much of the afternoon. Weber brought a miniscule 0.83 earned run average into Monday's games and lowered that with a three hit shutout of the Jays.

Courtney Comstock, Nadine Yunginger and Sebastian accounted for E-town's three hits.

The Bears used errors to put all of their runs on the board in the top of the fourth. Sam Lowes and Amy Gentile each knocked in a run via base hits, and Emile McFarland brought home another UC run on a fielder's choice.

Weber walked three and retired four by way of strikeout. E-town's pitching combo of Emily Vogel and Sebastian did not allow an earned run in the game. Vogel was credited with the loss after pitching 3.1 innings. Sebastian finished the game by tossing the other 3.2 innings.

Elizabethtown hosts Lycoming in Commonwealth Conference action Thursday at 3 p.m.
