Four-run sixth powers softball to split at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. -- Shannon Marsico, Courtney Comstock and Whitney Breneman each knocked in runs in the Elizabethtown College softball team's four-run sixth inning during game two of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Arcadia Saturday afternoon. Comstock punched a double to left field that plated two of the runs to give the Blue Jays a 5-3 victory in the nightcap. Arcadia used a one-hitter to shutout E-town 3-0 in game one.

E-town trailed 3-1 heading to the sixth, but got a leadoff single from Julie Sebastian and a one-out single from Sarah Pelletier to start the rally. Pelletier had accounted for the Blue Jays' (9-10, 1-3) only run to that point with her first collegiate home run back in the fourth.

Pelletier's classmate, Shayna Perella, singled to load the bases, setting up Marsico's RBI ground out that cut the Arcadia (10-6, 1-3) lead to 3-2.

Comstock then delivered one of her biggest at-bats of the season with a two-run double that put E-town in front. The sophomore has played well above her class standing this season. She leads the team in batting average (.350), hits (21), and on-base percentage (.437). Hit number 21 gave her RBIs six and seven and propelled the Jays to their first league win of the season.

Breneman put an insurance run on the board for E-town with her two-out single to left that made it 5-3.

Sebastian, who relieved starter Emily Vogel in the fifth, got into a bit of hot water in the seventh allowing a lead-off single and a walk. Sebastian's induced Virginia Buechel into a fielder's choice to end it, though, and improved to .500 on the season at 6-6.

Comstock, Pelletier and Sebastian all had two hits in game two for the Blue Jays. Ashley McCarthy provided a third of the Knights offense by going 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Arcadia used a stellar pitching performance from Kelsey Roberts in the opener to pick up a 3-0 victory. Roberts walked three and struck out two, but gave up just an Amanda Sheckard single in the fifth inning of her one-hit shutout.

Comstock, who walked in the third, stole her fifth base of the season in that inning. The Bloomsburg native swiped another bag in the second game.

Sebastian started and held the Knights' offense in check for five frames, but a three-run triple by Marissa Perez in the bottom of the sixth provided all the offense Arcadia would need. Sebastian gave up four hits and struck out six in defeat.

Elizabethtown is off Sunday before hosting Lycoming in a league doubleheader Monday afternoon in a makeup of a rainout from last Thursday.
