Softball scores back-to-back wins over Lesley, Medaille

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Heather Peluso and Elly McCarthy took turns driving the offensive bus for Elizabethtown College's softball team Monday afternoon. Each player had a three-RBI game as the Blue Jays beat Lesley 11-8 and Medaille 5-4 to get in the win column at the Spring Games at National Training Center.

The Blue Jays (2-2) and Lesley (1-2) engaged in a wild back-and-forth affair that featured runs in six of the seven innings. Peluso singled in McCarthy and Lindsey Cooper during E-town's three-run first inning. The Lynx struck back with two in the bottom of the first, but Elizabethtown would open its lead to 5-2 following a Courtney Comstock sacrifice fly and an illegal pitch by Lesley starter Cassandra Knox that plated Shannon Marsico.

Lesley managed to tie things up in the third with a three-run inning, though the only RBI it garnered in the inning was on a single by Ashley Conningham.

Elizabethtown fell behind for the first time following a two-run single from Emily Mangiaratti in the bottom of the fifth. Lesley had a 7-5 lead, but the Blue Jays weren't done yet. A triple from Whitney Breneman and a double from starting pitcher Julie Sebastian highlighted E-town's most productive inning with the sticks this young season. In all, E-town had five hits in the inning as they forged back in front 10-7.

Though Lesley was able to connect for 14 hits, Sebastian still earned her first win of 2011. The Lynx committed eight errors in the contest, which took two hours and 18 minutes to play.

The Blue Jays' second game of the day was no less exciting. Again it was E-town taking an early lead, but this time they just had to stave off Medaille's (2-4) multiple rallies.

With the game tied at four in the bottom of the seventh, Marsico led off by putting a perfect bunt down the third base line. Comstock followed with a single and Breneman walked as the Jays loaded the bases with no outs. Mavericks' pitcher Kristen Rohe got Cooper swinging, but she would not get McCarthy, who lined the game-winning hit into left field.

Early on it was déjà vu for the Blue and Gray, which scored three first inning runs for a second straight game. A single to center field by McCarthy accounted for her other two RBIs in the game and Sarah Pelletier picked up her first career collegiate RBI on another single late in the inning.

Emily Vogel went the distance in picking up her first win of the season for E-town. Vogel struck out four and did not allow a walk in the victory.

The Jays will enjoy a day off Tuesday before returning to the field for a pair of games Wednesday.
