TCNJ, No. 20 Emory get best of Blue Jays on opening day

CLERMONT, Fla. -- A young Elizabethtown College softball squad jumped head first into its 2011 season with a tough opening day doubleheader at the Spring Games at National Training Center Sunday. The Blue Jays dropped their opener 2-0 to NJAC preseason favorite TCNJ, before falling 5-0 to 20th-ranked Emory (Ga.) in their late game.

The College of New Jersey (1-0) no-hit E-town behind a stellar performance from pitcher Lauren Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons struck out 14 Blue Jays and allowed just one base runner —a seventh inning lead off walk drawn by Courtney Comstock— in her masterpiece.

Julie Sebastian was strong in the circle for the Blue and Gray, notching six strikeouts of her own. She suffered the tough luck loss by allowing an unearned run in the second and an Ashley Sogluizzo RBI single in the fifth.

In the Blue Jays' (0-2) loss to No. 20 Emory, Elly McCarthy led the way with a pair of hits for E-town. McCarthy gave Elizabethtown its first hit of the season with a single in the fifth and followed it up with the Jays' first extra base hit of the season —a double— in the seventh.

Kathy Staib's crew nearly broke the zero in the scoring column in the seventh inning after McCarthy doubled and Sebastian singled. Nadine Yunginger pinch-ran for Sebastian and appeared to steal second, giving the Blue Jays a pair of runners in scoring position. A questionable call by the umpire closest to the play deemed Yunginger out and flattened the E-town threat.

Emory (12-0) got a 3-for-4 effort from Dana Goodenough, who in turn drove in two of the Eagles' five runs. Jessica Thomas and Sophia Tarte each knocked in a run for Emory, while Jessica Boni and Lauren Gorodetsky joined Goodenough as players to collect multiple hits. The latter two players finished with two hits apiece.

Bridget Holloway allowed four hits and did not walk a batter in earning the victory. Emily Vogel sat down two EU hitters via strike out in going the distance for E-town.

Elizabethtown will hit the field again Monday with games against Lesley at 1:30 p.m. and Medaille at 3:30 p.m.
