Baseball wins second game of doubleheader at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Freshman Joey Seremula tossed a complete game in the back half of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader as the Elizabethtown College baseball team earned a split -and their first win of the 2011 season- at Bridgewater College. The Jays dropped the first game 5-1, before using Seremula's arm to pick up a 7-2 victory in game two.

Seremula (1-0) scattered five hits over nine innings, yielding both runs in E-town's road victory. He earned his first collegiate win in the process.

Bridgewater (5-4) got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI fly out by Brett Howell for a 1-0 lead.

Dillon Tagle got the Blue Jays' (1-2) offense rolling with a leadoff single in the top of the second. Matt Reade followed up with a double to move Tagle to third. Brian Verdelli grounded out to first to plate Tagle, followed by an RBI single by Anthony Heaps to give E-town a 2-1 lead.

The Blue Jays broke the game wide open with a big fourth inning. It started when a Kevin Berkheiser single allowed Reade to score E-town's third run of the game. The Jays recorded two more runs on a double by Tim Rosser that scored Berkheiser and Heaps. E-town tacked on its fourth run of the frame when a wild pitch allowed sophomore Kyle Gable to cross the plate.

Gable knocked home E-town's final run of the day with an RBI single in the top of the eighth.

Bridgewater's John Bayse gave up six runs on 4.1 innings to pick up the loss.

Reade went 3-4 from the plate, while Gable, Verdelli and Heaps registered two hits apiece in the contest.

In the first game, the Hornets put up four runs in the first two innings on E-town starter Rob Cressman (0-1). The Blue Jays would turn to Wayne Leonard, who pitched the next three innings, giving up one run over that stretch. Freshman Vaclav Hasik finished out the game hurling a scoreless sixth inning in his first action in the blue and gray.

Bridgewater held a 5-0 lead entering the seventh and final inning when E-town's Reade cracked a home run off Tyler Milstead to help the Blue Jays avoid the shutout.

Reade was the only player in the line up to have two hits for the Jays in the game.

Cressman took the loss, while Milstead went seven strong, striking out four to earn the win for the Hornets.

Next up for E-town is their annual trip to Florida where they will face off against La Roche in a doubleheader on March 6, before taking on Northwestern College (Minn.) in another twinbill on March 7.
