Richard Stockton holds off Blue Jays

YORK, Pa. -- Both Elizabethtown and Richard Stockton came into Saturday's consolation game at the White Rose City Classic in search of win number one on the season, and the result was a scrappy back-and-forth contest. Each side played with urgency and desperation, and while it was close all the way, it was Richard Stockton that left York with third place after a 78-74 victory.

Trailing by three with just over a minute left, Elizabethtown (0-3) couldn't get a shot off as they turned the ball over under the basket. The Ospreys (1-2) kept the Blue Jays alive, however, as Kevin Johnson missed both ends of the double bonus short, leaving it a one possession game.

Joe Schwalm's three from the top of the key hit back iron and front iron before bouncing off, but Andrew Mantz was fouled and sank both free throws to bring the Jays within one, 74-73, with 23 seconds left.

Pat Kelly walked to the other end and extended the Stockton lead back to three before Ben Cable was strategically fouled by the Ospreys. Cable, a York native, missed the first free throw and made the second, but with under two seconds to go Rich Suhr made both attempts to make it a two possession game, and ultimately sent E-town to its third loss in three games.

Though the Blue Jays never led in the contest, they never trailed by more than nine points, either. Both instances where Richard Stockton led by that many came in the first half. Schwalm took the team lead in scoring for a second straight game, putting in 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Mantz, Cable and freshman Jon Markel all put up 12 points on the afternoon. Mantz also added 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

Richard Stockton also put four guys in double figures. Salman Yusuff collected game-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds. DiAndre Brown added 16, Bill McDonough 12 and Suhr 10.

E-town gets its final non-conference test before Thanksgiving this Tuesday when it travels to Stevenson for a 7 p.m. start.
