Blue Jays Clinch Playoff Spot With 3-0 Win over Widener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Laura Wingert scored twice in a span of 5:16 early in the second half to help Elizabethtown College to a 3-0 victory over Widener University in a Commonwealth Conference women's soccer match at Ira R. Herr Field on Monday night.

Erin Scott added a goal and an assist and Amy Bunting made a key defensive play in the first half for the Blue Jays (8-8-0 overall, 4-2-0 Commonwealth), who locked up a conference playoff berth for the sixth straight season and the 13th time in the last 14 years with the win over the Pride (12-4-2 overall, 3-3-0 Commonwealth).

Widener nearly scored the game's first goal in the 30th minute, as a free kick by the Pride bounced around in the box and came to Casey LeRoy, whose shot was knocked away at the goal line by Bunting to preserve the scoreless tie.

The Blue Jays finally broke through at 51:33 when Wingert got past the Pride defense and fired home her fourth goal of the season. Just over five minutes later, Wingert took a feed from Scott, carried down the left side, cut to the middle and rifled home her second goal of the night at 56:49 to double the Elizabethtown lead to 2-0.

Scott wrapped up the scoring with 6:49 to play as she lofted a shot under the crossbar from 15 yards out, and Widener managed just one shot the rest of the way as the Blue Jays finished off their seventh shutout of the season.

Elizabethtown finished with a 21-6 advantage in shots and had an 8-2 margin in corner kicks over Widener, while both teams committed 12 fouls and received a yellow card.

Jess Manchak played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue Jays and earned her fifth shutout of the season. After Alee Gunter played the first 45 minutes for the Pride, Vanessa Hejnas played 16 minutes and allowed both goals to Wingert while making one save, and Rochele Jacobs played 29 minutes and gave up Scott's goal while making one two stops.
