Head Coach Jason Petronis WSOC 2012

Jason Petronis

  • Title
    Head Women's Soccer Coach
Jason Petronis was officially named the fifth head women's soccer coach in Elizabethtown history Dec. 13, 2010.

The 2012 Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year compiled a 47-24-9 (.644 winning percentage) career record in five seasons before stepping down from his post in the summer of 2015.

E-town increased its win totals in each of Petronis' seasons, qualifying for three conference tournaments and receiving an at-large berth into the 2013 NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Blue Jays enjoyed their third consecutive season with double-digit victories in 2014, going 13-4 overall and 6-1 as first-year members of the Landmark Conference. Petronis' team won in bunches, starting the year with a five-game winning streak and following it up with an eight-game winning streak from Oct. 4-Nov. 1. Elizabethtown earned the No. 2 seed in the Landmark Women's Soccer Championship, but fell to No. 3 seed Scranton, 2-1, in overtime of the semifinal round.

Petronis saw his 2012 team win 10 times and his 2013 squad rack up 12 wins, including a 1-0 shutout victory over then seventh-ranked Misericordia at home. E-town finished 7-2 in the Commonwealth Conference and went into the postseason as the No. 2 seed in the conference. Petronis' team was also selected for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time during his tenure.

Lauren Berry, the team's leading scorer with 16 goals in 2013, Kaceyanne Cerankowski, and Kendra Mancino were chosen All-Commonwealth Conference First Team, while Trisha Clark was named Second Team.

Petronis led the Blue Jays to their first 10-win season since 2008 when they registered a 10-3-6 record and earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament in 2012. Six players were named to all-conference teams under Petronis, including First Team choice Amy Bunting and Rookie of the Year Trisha Clark. Petronis coached Bunting, a 2012 NSCAA Division III Second Team All-America pick, along with 22 all-conference and nine NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region players during his tenure.

Petronis took over on an interim basis with seven games remaining in the 2010 season. He closed out the season by leading E-town to a 3-3-1 record. With a partial season in the books, Petronis flipped the page to 2011, his first leading the team through its paces for an entire year. His squad responded with a 9-6-2 record, the fewest losses by a Blue Jay team since 2008.

A young team with no seniors flourished in stretches under Petronis' guidance in 2011. The Blue Jays won five straight games from Sept. 10-21, registering four shutouts and outscoring their opponents 12-1 during the streak. Elizabethtown also showed poise under pressure, going 2-0-2 in games decided in overtime.

Petronis brought a defense first attitude to the team in his interim season and the Jays responded by allowing two goals or less in all seven games he coached. The team also registered two shutouts in that span.

Petronis played professionally for seven seasons after capping a stellar collegiate career at East Stroudsburg University. As a member of the Warriors he earned All-America honors and was named National Goalkeeper of the Year in 1995. Petronis still stands as the school’s career leader in saves, a record he is unlikely to lose anytime soon. With 439 career stops from 1992-95, Petronis is nearly 150 saves ahead of second place on the list.

In addition to leading ESU in career saves, Petronis is also the program’s all-time leader in shutouts, having registered 33 of them. He’s responsible for three of East Stroudsburg’s top four save totals in a single season and ranks sixth in career goals against average (0.95).

Petronis’ professional career carried him to stops with the former Reading Rage (USL Third Division), the now-defunct Hershey Wildcats (USL Second Division), and the Bay Area Seals (USL Second Division). Most impressively, however, was his call-up from Hershey in 2000 to the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.

In October of 2011, Petronis was one of eight individuals inducted into East Stroudsburg University's 34th Athletic Hall of Fame class. Petronis joined his father, John, in the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. The Petronis' are the second family with two-generations in ESU's Hall of Fame.

Petronis was no stranger to Elizabethtown prior to his appointment as the head women's soccer coach. He served as an assistant coach to Skip Roderick on the men’s soccer team from 2002-10.
