Assistant Coach Jeremy Matula XC 2013

Jeremy Matula

Jeremy Matula is in his third season as an assistant coach with the Blue Jays' men's and women's cross country teams. His experience and knowledge have been an asset to the programs over the past two years.

In 2012, Elizabethtown captured their fourth straight men's MAC title (12th in the last 14 seasons). The women's team made it a sweep as they claimed their sixth straight MAC XC Championship, and this year look to continue their dominant run in hopes of reaching a seventh straight league crown.

At the 2012 Mideast Regional Championships, the men's and women's team finished sixth and fifth, respectively. Matt Rever '14 was the lone All-Region performer for the Blue Jays, taking 30th. For the women, Traci Tempone '14 was tenth and qualified individually to represent E-town at the NCAA Division III National Championships, where she would finish 55th.

In his first season on the coaching staff in 2011, Elizabethtown swept the MAC Cross Country Championships and put forth strong showings at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional meet. The men's team competed at the NCAA Division III Championships for the seventh time in program history, taking 18th, while the women placed 22nd in their fifth appearance at nationals. Each team was led by the individual MAC Champion, with Eric Reichert '12 pacing the men and Tempone '14 the frontrunner for the women.

Matula wore an Elizabethtown College uniform for three seasons in cross country, finishing a career-best third at the MAC Championships as a senior in 2008. The third-place finish was the top performance by a Blue Jay runner at the meet and put Matula on the All-MAC First Team.

Originally intending to play soccer at Elizabethtown, Matula did not compete in intercollegiate athletics until he joined the cross country team as a sophomore. Thus, he was left with an extra year of eligibility upon graduating from the College. While attending the Pennsylvania State University's Dickinson School of Law in State College, Matula walked on to the Nittany Lions' men's cross country team and earned a spot to represent the Big Ten school in the 2009 Big Ten Conference Championships and the subsequent NCAA Division I Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Matula finished as Penn State's eighth runner at Big Tens, and was their sixth runner at regionals.

A native of Bath, Pa., the Northampton Area High School graduate also competed on the Blue Jays' indoor and outdoor track & field teams for three seasons. He still holds the sixth fastest time in school history in the outdoor 10,000-meter run (31:45.35) and the eighth best time in the indoor 3,000-meter run (8:53.96).

Matula picked up two bronze medals at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, taking third in the 10,000m at the 2008 and 2009 conference meets. Both performances were worthy of All-MAC First Team selections. He also notched three All-MAC Second Team spots during his career - all at 5,000m between the 2008 indoor season and 2009 outdoor season.

Outside of coaching, Matula works for the College as an Assistant Director of Admissions. He graduated cum laude from Elizabethtown with a BA in political philosophy & legal studies and philosophy - professional ethics (business administration concentration) in 2009. He currently resides in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
