Scranton fends off men's lacrosse

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team fell behind Scranton and made a comeback attempt that was fended off by the Royals, who held on for an 11-9 win at Wolf Field on Saturday.

Both teams scored twice in the first quarter as Finn Kristan set up Tristan Coleman to make it 1-0 Blue Jays in the first minute. Scranton then scored both their first-quarter goals before Jay Rodriguez tied it up at 2-2 with 2:24 to go in the first.

Kristan gave the Jays the lead in the second, but the Royals would outscore Etown 4-2 to go into half ahead 6-4. Coleman scored a man-up goal late in the first half to make it a two-goal game by the break.

Elizabethtown trailed by as many as three goals twice in the third, but battled back to an 8-8 tie after Brent Wehland (x2) and Rodriguez recorded goals. The Royals were able to take the lead back late in the third on Kyle Holmes' goal with 22 seconds remaining.

There were three goals in the fourth, all scored within the first five minutes of the quarter, but two went in Scranton's favor as they maintained their lead. Wehland scored the final goal for either side with 11:46 left in regulation as the game ended 11-9.

Ben Zaitz made five saves in goal for the Jays.

The Blue Jays are on the road at Lycoming on Friday, April 3, at 12 p.m.
