Softball splits opening day

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team split its opening day of games in Florida. Gianna Anzideo threw a complete game in game two to get the win for the Blue Jays in six innings over Saint Vincent (Pa.), 12-3.

GAME 1: BETHANY LUTHERAN 11, ELIZABETHTOWN 4
After four batters, Elizabethtown led 2-0. Skye Zolomij hit a leadoff double to left center in the first at-bat of the season. Jess Dunn singled through the left side to move Zolomij up to third, and on the throw in, Dunn shifted up to second to put two runners in scoring position.

Emily Bittner flew out to deep right to score Zolomij from third as Etown went up 1-0. Brooke Huczko laid down a perfect bunt with no play for the defense as Dunn scored on the play to make it 2-0.

Bethany Lutheran struck back in the bottom half of the first with three runs and would post at least a run in each of the first four innings. The Vikings led 8-4 after four innings.

Huczko and Dunn both had RBI hits in the third and fourth innings, respectively. They led the Jays with three hits apiece in the opening game. Morgan Carr and Taylor Sherry recorded their first career hits. In the circle, Dana Delamater and Julie Bergen both made their first appearances and recorded their first collegiate strikeouts.

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 12, SAINT VINCENT 3
The second and third innings were big ones for the Blue Jays, as they scored four in the second and six in the third to take a commanding 10-0 lead over the Bearcats.

Hannah Long and Huczko each hit two-RBI hits in the second inning. Lily Baldwin singled in Carr in the third, her first hit and RBI for the Jays. Dunn also hit a two-RBI double to right and Carr drove in Dunn in the big third inning.

Anzideo kept Saint Vincent quiet, only allowing three hits and two earned runs over her six innings of work.

Baldwin tripled to right to plate the game-ending runs. She was a team-best 3-for-4 in game two.

Elizabethtown faces Illinois College and Johnson & Wales (RI) tomorrow at Legends Way ballfields.
