Four wrestlers surge into weight class semis at Region 3 Championships

EWING, N.J. -- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team had four wrestlers advance to the semifinals on Friday at day one of the NCAA Div. III Region 3 Championships hosted at the College of New Jersey with one still alive in the consi rounds.

Justice Hockenberry wrestled twice on Friday and won big in both of his matches. After an opening round bye, the junior scored a 15-0 tech fall over Misericordia's Jacob Weaver. In the 165 quarters, Hockenberry majored Tallion Elliott of Marymount (Va.), 21-10. He will face TCNJ's Jordan Ayyash in the semifinal round.

Ganon Smith did as he as done all season and that's dominate the opponent across from him. The top-seeded 184-pounder pinned Del Val's Joseph McCullough in 1:52 before scoring a second fall in the quarters at 2:33 over Arcadia's James Lledo. Smith will face a familiar opponent in Messiah's Austin Brass in the semis.

Unlike Hockenberry and Smith, Will Davis had an opening round match at 197, which he won handily with a 16-0 tech fall over Misericordia's Tristan Cuellar. For the second time in a few weeks, Davis dealt with Gettysburg's Phil Nave, earning another win over the Bullets' 197-pounder with a 10-7 decision to advance into the quarters. There, Davis majored NYU's Mohammad Talebi, 14-3. He'll face top-seeded Josh Stahl of York (Pa.) in the semifinal round.

Sav Niewiadomy also went 3-0 on the day, first taking down Albright's Joseph Gassert by pin at 6:56. The sophomore then won two consecutive decisions, 7-1 and 9-5, to make it to the semifinal round at 285. He'll also face the top seed, Arcadia's Logan Flynn.

Owen Heffner remains alive in the consolation side at 141. The senior fell in the round of 16, but won by sudden victory over Hopkins' Max Apsel and again by medical forfeit over Lucas Tirpak of Arcadia. He takes on Messiah's Jacob Cunningham tomorrow needing another win to stay in it.

Tomorrow's action begins again at 10 a.m.
