Men's soccer drops regular season finale to Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team needed a result in Wednesday night's Landmark Conference regular season finale at Ira R. Herr Field, but the Greyhounds had other ideas as they beat the Blue Jays 3-1. The loss, coupled with a Lycoming win over Wilkes, knocks Etown out of the postseason.

There wasn't much margin for error coming into the night's game. The Jays, who sat two points above the Warriors for the final spot in the conference tournament, needed to at least tie Moravian as they held the head-to-head tiebreaker in the event Elizabethtown and Lycoming finished level on points.

Etown fell behind in the 32nd minute as Logan Moore got through a couple defenders and poked a ball into the net to make it 1-0. A few minutes later, a corner got into the middle of the goal mouth and went off a Jays' defender and deflected into the goal as the Greyhounds quickly went up 2-0.

Logan Sumner had made an impressive save earlier in the game to keep it 0-0 in the 11th minute. The ball was headed out off a Moravian corner and bounced to Max Tenezia at the right side, top of the box. The senior hit a half volley that Sumner was able to locate with several bodies in his way. He dove to his right and kept the ball out.

After trailing by two at the half, Elizabethtown thought they had a goal in the 54th minute, but the offside flag was raised and the goal waved away.

The Greyhounds scored in the 72nd minute to go ahead 3-0, but the Blue Jays responded in just over a minute's time. Caba Alvarez latched onto a backwards touch from a defender and raced in on goal. He was able to slot a ball past the goalie to make it 3-1.

It was too little, too late as Moravian was able to wind down the clock and limit Etown's chances to hold on for the two-goal victory.
