Blue Jays fall to Wilkes in final doubleheader of season

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team fell to Wilkes in both games on Saturday to close out the season. Skye Zolomij had three hits on the day for the Blue Jays.

Jess Dunn and Kristen Aydelotte put Elizabethtown ahead in the first inning, each earning an RBI. Dunn grounded out to short, but scored Zolomij, who had doubled in her first at-bat. Aydelotte singled in Maddie Reever.

After Wilkes got a run back in the top half of the second, the Blue Jays used an RBI hit from Reever to make it a 3-1 game.

With runners at first and third, Zolomij put down the bunt. Kaylee Whiteford, at third, read the play well and waited for the defense to make the play at first before darting home. She was able to score safely while Hannah Long went from first to third. Etown got one run in the inning and led 4-1 through four.

The Colonels picked away at the lead, getting two back in the sixth and trailed by a run going into the seventh.

Hanna Cross homered to left field with Hannah Boyd standing at first. That gave Wilkes their first lead of the game and Mia Butka closed it out in the bottom half to finish off the comeback.

Long, Zolomij, Reever, and Aydelotte each had a pair of hits in game one.

WILKES 4, ELIZABETHTOWN 0
Ace Lauren DeMarco was in the circle for Wilkes in game two and controlled the Jays through her seven innings of work.

She scattered four hits for Etown and the Jays stranded five base runners, but no Blue Jay made it past second base in the game. Zolomij doubled in the third, but DeMarco avoided anything else.

Nicole Cecconi, a pinch runner in the fifth, moved up to second on Long's bunt single with one out, but DeMarco again got out of the inning without issue.

Wilkes scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings while racking up 10 hits in their 4-0 game two victory.

Zolomij, Whiteford, Reever, and Long had the hits for the Blue Jays.
