Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Franey becomes Landmark all-time saves leader in win over Catholic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Graduate student Brayden Franey needed five saves to become the all-time saves leader in Landmark Conference history. The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team needed all 13 saves he had on the night in their 11-9 win over Catholic. Reese Levinson notched a hat trick for the Jays.

It was an even affair at Wolf Field as the game was tied after the first, second, and third quarters.

Etown went ahead on Joel Maragoto's goal from three-quarters field. On the clear, Franey passed over to the near side to his fellow graduate student, and with Liam Daly covering out of goal, Maragoto launched a ball into the open net to make it 1-0.

Catholic scored consecutive goals before Tristan Coleman set up Lucca Scomillio with 3:05 left in the first. It was 2-2 after one.

Jake Woodworth got strong side and slung a shot to make it 3-2 early in the second. A minute later, Franey recorded his fifth save, the record-breaking save at 13:43 of the second quarter, and sent the Jays the other way. That turned into a goal as Jay Rodriguez scored his first of two in the game.

The Cardinals scored twice, then Rodriguez again, and it was 5-4 going into the final minutes. Catholic tied the game with a little less than four minutes before half and the teams were tied at 5-5 at halftime.

The third quarter was another defensive quarter with both teams each scoring only twice. The Jays went ahead on Reese Levinson's goal, but Catholic tied it back up not too long after that. Brent Wehland set up Coleman for a goal, only to have the Cardinals knot it back up and it went 7-7 into the fourth.

Alejandro Masferrer put the visitors ahead early in the fourth, but Levinson's second goal made it 8-8. Etown reeled off three more goals to take an 11-8 lead into the final 5:30 of the game. Scomillio dished to Wehland, who blistered a shot past Daly to return the Jays to the front. Then, Landon Scully got inside on the Cardinals defense and scored in close. Levinson's hat trick goal made it a three-goal game.

Catholic got one back at 4:39, but Elizabethtown was able to control the ball, and the clock, and ride out the game to move to 7-1 in the conference.

Franey passed now Juniata coach Dylan Alplanalb, former goalie for Susquehanna for the all-time saves lead, which had stood at 737.

The Blue Jays will have 10 days off before hosting Susquehanna in the regular season finale on Saturday, April 26, at 12 p.m.
