ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- After a scoreless draw through regulation and overtime, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team fell in penalties to Susquehanna on Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field.
Olivia Herbert hit the crossbar from about 25 yards out in the 21st minute to nearly open the scoring for Elizabethtown.
Less than 10 minutes later,
Jenna Hoffmann's header off a
Sara Bean corner looked destined for goal. With the goalie out of position, it was up to the defender at the back post to clear the ball off the line before it crossed, keeping it a 0-0 game.
The Blue Jays had the wind at their back in the first half and played as the better side, but were unable to break through on the scoreboard.
Hoffmann was close to scoring in the 58th minute as her left footer from outside the box was headed toward the upper right corner. A diving save was needed by Susquehanna goalie Katie Henchy to keep it out.
The River Hawks were close in the 60th minute as Olivia St. Amand drilled the left post. Then, late in the game Ava Bilmeyer drove a shot just outside the right post.
After no real quality chances in either overtime period, the game was settled on penalties.
The River Hawks were clinical in their takes and Henchy made another acrobatic save to lift Susquehanna into the semifinal round as they took it on PKs, 4-2.
