SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- While it wasn't the way they would have wanted, the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team clinched the top seed in the Landmark Conference despite a 9-8 overtime loss at Susquehanna.
Gavin Gismondi and
Colin Kondracki each had hat tricks for the Jays in the game.
A loss put Elizabethtown, Susquehanna and Scranton in a three-way tie at 8-1 in the Landmark. Deciding the seed order came down to the third tiebreaker, which was goal differential amongst tied teams. The Blue Jays had a good lead in that after they had beaten Scranton a few weeks back and were at the plus-seven-goal maximum while Scranton beat Susquehanna by a goal last weekend. A win or a loss by no more than five goals against the River Hawks on Saturday would give the Blue Jays the no. 1 seed and that's what happened.
Etown was ahead 4-1 after the first thanks to Gismondi's hat trick and one for Kondracki.
Riley Langen had assists on the final two goals of the opening quarter.
Only two goals came in the second, one for each side.
Connor Stewart, who had a team-high seven ground balls, scored a man down with 3:24 to go in the half and the Jays led 5-2 at the break.
Susquehanna worked their way back with a 2-0 advantage in third-quarter scoring to make it a one goal game going into the fourth.
Alex Kilgour pushed it back to two early in the fourth. Then, the River Hawks recorded three consecutive goals to take their first lead of the game at 7-6 with six minutes remaining.
Tristan Coleman and Kilgour each set up Kondracki for goals at 4:51 and 3:51 of the fourth as the Jays went back in front.
A late goal with 16 seconds left tied the game and forced overtime. Susquehanna would get the game winner with a little over two minutes to go to get the win.
Elizabethtown gets home field and will host a Landmark semifinal on Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. with the opponent to be determined.Â
