Wrestling finishes fourth at Messiah Invitational, three Blue Jays win weight class

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- In their first competition day of the season, the Elizabethtown College wrestling team finished fourth at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday. Corey Cope, Ganon Smith, and Will Davis each won their weight class while five total placed for the Blue Jays. Etown totaled 115 points on the day.

Cope, wrestling for the first time in an Elizabethtown uniform, went 4-0 on the day at 133. He went tech fall, pinfall, pinfall to get into the first-place match. There, in a much closer result, Cope came out on top with a 9-8 decision.

Smith, a two-time NCAA qualifier, wasted no time racking up wins as he also put up a 4-0 record at Messiah. The junior won by fall in his opening match, by major in his second match and by fall again to reach the first-place match at 184. Smith eeked out a 1-0 decision to take first.

The third winner for the Jays was Davis at 197. Like Cope and Smith, Davis won by pinfall multiple times. His first two matches, in fact, were by fall. The senior then won by major to advance to the first-place match, where he won by fall for a third time on the day. That pinfall came in 1:25 to earn the top spot on the podium.

Gavin Fehr took third at 165 for Elizabethtown and Braden Schuyler was fifth at 133.

Etown will host Shippensburg for their first dual match of the season at the Bowers Center Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m.
