Third criteria helps Wilkes edge wrestling

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It was another thrilling dual match between the Elizabethtown College wrestling team and Wilkes at Thompson Gymnasium Friday night for Alumni Night. Tied after all 10 bouts, it came down to the scoring criteria where Wilkes had the edge in total scoring, 55-52, to get the extra point and edge the Blue Jays, 23-22.

Wilkes led after 125, but Elizabethtown responded with points at 133 and 141 thanks to Corey Cope and David Panone. Cope earned the quick tech fall in the first period to put the Jays in front, 5-3. Panone added a 6-3 decision to make it 8-3.

The Colonels took the matchups at 149 and 157 with consecutive technical falls to get back in front, 13-8.

Justice Hockenberry didn't concede a point at 165 in his 16-0 tech fall victory to tie the match at 13-13.

Wilkes went back ahead with a decision at 174, leaving the final three highly contested matches to decide the night's winner.

Ganon Smith recorded the first pinfall of the night at 2:32 to give EC the edge, 19-16. Will Davis followed that up with a comeback sudden victory over nationally-ranked Cameron Butka. Davis had led Butka until an escape and a takedown left Davis a point short with time winding down in the third period. The senior did manage an escape just before time expired to force the OT. Davis came through for the Blue Jays with the takedown to claim the three points for Elizabethtown, 8-5 SV-1.

Ahead by six, the Colonels were able to tie it once again in the final match of the night at 285 as Caleb Burkhart got the fall in the first period.

That forced the review of criteria to decide the match winner. Needing to get to the third criteria, total team scoring, Wilkes totaled more points in the matches, 55-52, to get the additional team point to win the match.

Elizabethtown will host the Blue Jay Classic on Saturday, December 7, in the Bowers Center Fieldhouse.
