Women's Volleyball Sweeps Wilkes, Alvernia on Senior Day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team had a great showing on Saturday inside Thompson Gymnasium on senior day as they swept, Wilkes and Alvernia. The Blue Jays move to 11-6 overall and 2-0 in Landmark Conference play.

GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 3; WILKES 0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-17)
Emma Bitner led the team with 21 assists while Sophie Savick tallied 16 assists and four aces. Lucy Stanek totaled 13 kills (.303), Savannah Lesley totaled 12 kills and Lucy Stern grabbed 15 digs. Bitner also earned her 100th career service ace.

Elizabethtown started off the first set with an 8-2 lead following five straight points. Wilkes came back within three before kills from Ida Fisher, Bitner, and Kate Barbon extended Etown's lead, 13-5. The Colonels again caught up to the Blue Jays after a 6-1 run. Six points in a row with the help from two aces from Savick put Etown up 22-12. Fisher smacked down the final kill for Etown to win, 25-16.

Set two started tight between the two teams as Elizabethtown held a slight 10-9 edge after kills from Gracie Britten and Leah Gormley. Stanek, Britten, Barbon, and Fisher then tied up the set at 17-17. Wilkes grabbed the lead at 21-19 before the set ended in a back-n-forth fashion with the Blue Jays coming out on top, 27-25.

Wilkes gained momentum heading in to set three as they started off with an 8-4 lead. A kill from Lesley and a kill and ace from Stanek tied up the set, 8-8. The Blue Jays jumped to a 17-13 lead after Lesley, Bitner, Britten, Fisher, and Stanek tallied kills. Stanek recorded two straight kills to put the Blue Jays up, 22-16. One final kill from Wilkes before Etown took the set, 25-17.

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 3; ALVERNIA 0 (25-20, 25-8, 25-22)
Bitner totaled 18 assists, Stanek recorded 11 kills (.265) while Stern totaled 15 digs. Fisher grabbed a career-high 5 total blocks and Britten tallied four aces.
Alvernia started strong in set one taking an 8-2 lead before Elizabethtown rattled off seven straight points. The middle of the set was tight until the Golden Wolves began to pull away as they took a 19-15 lead after six in a row. The Blue Jays got it back with kills from Britten and Stanek and ended the set on a five-point run to win, 25-20.

The Blue Jays offense exploded in set two as they jumped to a 14-2 lead. During the Blue Jays run, Britten tallied three of her four aces in the game. After a little back and forth, Etown continued to lead 23-5. Alvernia got back some points with a 3-0 run, but it wasn't enough as two Golden Wolves errors ended the set 25-8.

The third set started closer with Elizabethtown leading 10-9. Alvernia took the lead after tallying four in a row before the Blue Jays regained the lead at 15-14.  A kill from Stanek and block from Fisher along with Alvernia errors pushed the Jays lead to 22-18. The Golden Wolves went on a 4-1 run before a Fisher kill and Alvernia error ended the set, 25-22.

Elizabethtown will travel to #1 Juniata next Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m. to continue Landmark play.
