ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A pivotal moment in the second half as a straight red was shown to the Susquehanna starting goalie to put the River Hawks down to 10 men with just under a half hour to go in the game and the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team took advantage of it. The Blue Jays scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute to take down Susquehanna 2-1 at Ira R. Herr Field on Saturday.
Manny Velazquez had the best opportunity of the first half inside the opening 30 minutes as he dribbled his way through a number of defenders and unleashed a shot at goal, but it took a diving save from Tony Burns to keep it out of the net. The Blue Jays would get their first-half goal, however.
On a corner from the far side,
Hudson Peck swung in a curling ball that met the head of towering junior
Thomas Smith in the middle of the six yard box. His header whipped into the back of the net to put Etown up 1-0 in the 36th minute.
The River Hawks outshot the Blue Jays in the first half, but did not record a shot on target.
Pedro Miranda kept it 1-0 with a save in the 52nd minute, the stop coming off an initial blocked shot attempt. Moments later, though, Susquehanna was able to equalize as Max Paczewski followed in Hayden Swinehart's free kick on goal to put home the goal in the 53rd minute.
Pedro Vinent had a header go off the finger tips of Burns in the 54th minute as the Brazilian nearly put his team back into the lead.
Then, minutes after another save from Miranda, Burns was caught well out of goal and a Blue Jay player running onto the ball. As the ball bounced, it contacted Burns' hand on the counter and the referee had no choice but to issue a straight red card for the denial of a goal scoring opportunity.
Within 10 minutes, the Jays had the lead.
Gavin Domsohn's shot went off the crossbar and dropped to the feet of Vinent, who lashed a shot that bounced off a defender and into the net to restore Elizabethtown's lead at 2-1.
Miranda made two more saves in the game, but did not have to record a save over the final 12 minutes.
With the win, it was the first time since 2015 that the women's and men's team swept a doubleheader from Susquehanna.
Elizabethtown will travel to Catholic on Wednesday, October 16, at 7 p.m.
